I had the motor blow in my 2009 Prado D4D which was being driven at 90kph. The motor had only done 147k,
been regularly serviced and well looked after. Toyota wanted 14k to put a new motor in, which I thought was a bit rich. Managed to secure a 2nd hand motor, that had done 85k, for 8k fitted. That motor came out of a 2010 model, that had a burnt out interior. I thought I was very lucky. While the motor was being fitted, another 150 series came into the yard with exactly the same problem. I thought what is going on here. That was in January 2016.
I managed to go to Victoria, towing a 1.8t caravan ok. We have just got back from a holiday to Cairns and back, towing the van, and guess what. The exact same problem occurred 50k's out from Three Ways in the NT on the Barkley Highway. No phone reception, no towns and no motor. I managed to get the vehicle to Three Ways on 2 cylinders, and flat out at 60kph. I thought the motor is stuffed, so why not keep going. I wrote to Toyota when the first motor blew and their response was that it was out of warranty, so bad luck, we are not going to help you! We had to purchase a new vehicle in Alice Springs because no-one could fix the car quickly, and we did not have the time to wait for repairs. I might add that I did not purchase a Toyota. Could someone advise me on what to do about some sort of compensation from Toyota. These sort of things should not happen to modern vehicles.
