  • Air Compressors

Used the search. Surprised we didn't have a thread about air compressors! That I could see.

The one I have has just died after stuff all use. It's about 2 years old but has only done a few small jobs here and there. I went to use it the other day and it went for 2 seconds and stopped dead. No strange noise, no burning smell, no getting hot, just nothing. The usual tapping with a hammer and checking the wiring revealed nothing. Considering the amount of work it's done I was peed friggin off. As below it is a Projecta Cyclone.

Looking at the Bushranger series in ARB today I noted it looked very similar to some of those. Got talking to the sales guy there who said that the Bushranger air compressors do indeed have a lot of rip off copies that look almost identical. Some of the copies, apparently, have plastic pistons which take absolutely no punishment at all. I'm wondering if that might be the case with this one.

Just wondering what portable air compressors people have and what their experiences are with the ones they've got. Apparently, even the el-cheapo Bushranger (smallest model) will pump up to 120 Psi! Albeit slowly.

      IP,

      My preferences are below:

      1 - Blue Tongue

2 - TJM Ox Compressor (34.8L per minute max airflow, 5 year warranty)

      3 - Bushranger

4 - ARB (I got one of these, they are good quality, would prefer a higher airflow rate though).

      Hope this helps.
      Cheers,

The ARB CKMA12 is a ripper, although it's designed to be permanantly mounted, you could rig it up to be portable, best of all if you want to get lockers down the track it's already setup for them. (This is the high output version)

Have a look at LFaR's thread re his own research.

Does anyone have any comments about either the Bushranger Automax or Supermax?

I am looking for a reliable portable air unit and also note the Bushranger series come with 5 year warranties. First hand PP advice appreciated.

I've been using a Bushranger Max Air for a couple of years now and it's been excellent in every sense of the word. It just works and is pretty damn fast. It has a thermal cut-out against over heating, but it has never needed to kick in. I think the 'duty cycle' is someting like 40mins and in that time you could inflate a few 4WD's.

                    Hi

I had the original ARB air compressor from about 6 years ago. After pumping up 4 tyres from 20psi to 30psi on a hot day, it karked it. I took it to ARB and they fixed it even though it was out of warranty. They asked what I had used it for and I said "pumping up tyres". They said "It's not really designed for that, it is meant to operate air lockers". A plastic poppet valve had melted.
I then left it in the car when I sold the car and bought a TJM Ox. Can't say that I have worked it hard but it is apparently a better quality unit and seems fine. Output is noticeably better.
I think that ARB now sell a better one as well as a really small one for air lockers - can't say I have paid much attention to their compressors now.

                    Cheers - John

Yep, the relatively new ARB High Output Air Compressor - CKMA12, is a real beauty. Terriffic for pumping tyres and also suited to air-lockers if you choose to go down that path in the future. It comes in either a portable or under-bonnet configuration.

For more info see the the installation and some comparison info.

                      All the best,

Thanks... the positive reviews and the 5yr warranty are enough for me.

I picked up a Maxx Air compressor from Kmart (suggested it to Santa a year ago!) - and it is an absolute belter! Cost around $95 and from chatting to others on the trails it is as good as one of the $300 ARB jobs!
