    Re: Post change plans..

IMHO the post count is irrelevant... but I would hate to see strict interpretation of posting rules to prevent some of the posts that are added. While this is a Prado enthusiasts forum, some of the side banter and (humourous) commentary in amongst all the threads makes it so much more enjoyable and sociable. The social and friendly atmosphere of this forum is what makes it so great... and of course the information and experience that can also be accessed quickly and easily just tops it all off. Whatever changes are made, don't ever let this change!
Totally agree 100% with ntpryce. This is one of the few, and possibly the only 4x4 forum that does allow humour that is relative and appropriate.
On another forum some of it could be seen as sledging or sarcasm and the thread goes downhill in sync with any subsequent replies. I think many of the best humerous comments here come from the moderators themselves and personally I get a good kick out of reading these even if they do not relate strictly to the original post.
That's what makes PP unique. Don't lose that

Way behind us, that was done a few days ago, anyone under 6 months and inactive was spared but emailed a reminder. Anyone over 6 months, Bye bye..

New activations are at their slowest currently due to the fact we are being hit with about 50-80 spammers trying to register everyday now..

I dont know of any posts or threads apart from a very small amount (2-4?) that have been deleted recently?

        Re: Post change plans..

I think it is more the one word postings that are coming to attention rather than witty replies and the likes. Sheesh even I may have been known to partake in a whitful banter (What what!) now and again.

These could be very lazy posters or could also be people trying to bump their post counts.. Hard to tell sometimes, but one word answers really dont make a lot of sense usually, and arent really a contribution most would agree..

How will this affect new users who have to post so many posts before they can sell an item on PP?

            Re: Post change plans..

It will only be the post count that is invisible, not the actual number, Mods and admin will still be able to see it.

But the way PHP is going it looks like it may be staying.

              Re: Post change plans..

The only way that I am aware of to make the post count "invisible" from the forum view is to remove that section of code from the template, could tell you off the top of my head how to do it in phpbb2 but they've changed the templates in version 3. I can have a squiz at the code (from one of my boards) and let you know which template to edit.
Do you only want it invisible in the forum view or in the user profile as well?

              Cheers

                Hi Matt,

Will have a look at the code for the forum view template and let you know.

I've not looked at the code either, but it may be possible to render the text in the same colour as the background, so even though the text is still there, it's not visible...

OK Matt found the 2nd piece of code, tested it on one of my forums and no errors.

Do you want me to post it here or via pm?

                              Re: Post change plans..

                              Hmmmm Postcounts.

There does at times seem to be a bit of post ramping going on. Posting for the post count's sake.

I know in other forums people look at the post count (rightly or wrongly) for an indication of how much stock they might place in someones comments. If they see a fanatic on the Sunbeam toaster forum with 6000 posts and who joined in 1973, there's a fair chance the person might know a thing or two. If they look at my paltry 3 posts and a join date of yesterday, someone might suspect I don't know as much as Mr 6000. I know the post count essentially means nothing, but what else do people have to gauge you by. I say a Prado was built in 1968 as a military vehicle and had a 6 inch cannon. Bollocks, you might say. But then you see a post count of 6000 and think you might just check Wikipedia. Could you make 6000 posts about Prado's with cannons and not get kicked the heck out?? Ok so you could "one liner" your way to 6000 posts in an attempt to get false cred and soak up the limelight. True enough. Hopefully not enough people will do that though to make it a problem.

Ranking systems work well too. However people still seem to post ramp one liners with frightening speed to get the rank of "Uber Toasting Freak" written under their names. My view is that ranks and post counts do give people some indication of your dedication to the subject at hand, and can be useful because of that. You need to weigh that against evil post rampers and decide which option everybody wants.

Post counts are a part of forum life and have been for a long time. Having said that, it'd be an interesting experiment to see what the changes in posting would be if you took them out.

                                Re: Post change plans..

I still think that post counts issue is somewhat irrelevant and won't actually address the issue. The fact is, Moderators and other forum members will, through peer pressure and other comments/actions, moderate the use of the forum. If you are continually breaching forum etiquette, posting for posts sake or continually waffling off topic, then it will soon become readily apparent to all. There has been a few good examples of where other PPointers have clearly 'moderated' the posts of others or put them in their place. If such action were to continue, I am sure a PM complaint to the Moderators, or they themselves, would take quick action to limit the persons future involvement on the forum.

As a reminder, here are some common forum etiquette rules that we all should remember:

 Do not use all caps or SHOUT in your posts.

 When replying to a post, do not quote more from the previous post than you have to.

 Do not post new problems on someone else's thread and interrupt a topic of discussion.

 Do not use someone else’s thread for a private conversation. Use PM for this.

 Do not post ”empty” or useless responses. Only post responses when you have something to contribute.

                                Stay on topic.

But as I said before, some of the short and quick comments and other by-play on the forums makes this one stand out from the rest. It's this unique atmosphere that makes PradoPoint.com not only a great forum for knowledge and experience to draw upon, but also a great social atmosphere to visit and enjoy. Hopefully this will never change.

Slightly off topic, but signature etiquette should also be enforced. The use of links is a great way to reduce signature length but still show off your rig and extras. Having recent visited myswag.org, I hate the way that some of their signatures really clutter and make the forum very difficult to read, view and search.
