  • Camper trailer modifications

Hi all, after a bit of advice.

We are the proud custodians and regular users of an early 80's Cub Campo matic camper trailer. It has been in my family since new and in top condition due to always being garaged at home and strict rules if ever we take it away.

We are now a family of four and always contemplating updating (every camping show anyway). This usually lasts a few days till i invariably turn my thoughts to "doing up the old one." This is where i am at now, again.

The mods will include Bigger wheels, possibly to match tow vehicle but this may be too extreme but would look pretty rad (currently 10" alloys), suspension upgrade to take more weight, strengthened draw bar ( have ideas about a telescopic section to allow rear door access to a Prado), Fitting on the rear for bike rack and maybe storage box on "a" frame. If you put all these ideas together it would appear i need a chassis of some sort.

If anyone has had a similar vision i would be really keen to share ideas good or bad. Anyone know a good trailer fabricator in sydney. Thanks.

    Have you checked out myswag.org :?: :?:

It might be a better forum to get the answer to your question. 8)

      Re: Camper trailer modifications

It sounds like a great project.
I am alittle unsure of what the camper looks like, But i think it is a hard floor flip over camper???
You will have to be sure the floor section will still be sturdy and sitting the ground with the higher pivot points caused by lifting the whole shebang.

One problem with soft floor campers and bigger wheels/ higher suspension is that because the canvas is mounted to the top of the trailer where the bed section is, any change it hight effects the canvas sides and floor meeting the ground in the correct way. The drop from bed height to floor standard hieghts sees the canvas fall neatly to the ground then the floor run neatly away. A raise of 2-3 inches will mean the side canvas will be 2-3 inches off the ground and the floor will be held up near the camper. 2-3 inches is an easy gain with bigger wheels and suspension.

The rest of your plans (to me) seem to have no draw backs. altho the telescopic draw bar might be tricky to get working well.

      Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
