  • New Laws for suspension upgrades

    Hot off the press!!
Thought our NSW members might be interested in this one. The engineering bit now applies to all vehicles and any changes to suspension height, it would appear.

TOUGH NEW RULES FOR CAR HOONS

    Thursday 16 July 2009

Minister for Roads Michael Daley today announced that car hoons who raise or lower their
cars’ suspension will have to meet tough new rules.

Mr Daley said car owners would be limited to raising or lowering their suspension by no
more than 5 centimetres from August 1 2009, and all modifications would need
    engineering approval.

“These changes mean every driver who modifies the suspension on their car must have it
approved to make sure it’s safe to be on our roads,” he said.

“At the moment, vehicles can be raised or lowered by up to 5 centimetres without approval,
and by up to 15 centimetres with authorised engineering approval.

“I don’t want to see young hoons putting their lives or the lives of others at risk, just
because they think their car looks better 15 centimetres closer to the ground.

“These hoons may think their car looks cool, but as far as I’m concerned anything more
than a 5 centimetre change in a car’s suspension is dangerous and doesn’t belong on our
    roads.

“Raising or lowering a vehicle’s height can put the driver, passengers, and other road
    users at risk.

“It can affect handling, braking and safety features such as electronic stability control.

“It can also change the position of vital impact-absorbing sections of a car, designed to
reduce the severity of a crash.

“Raising a vehicle’s suspension can also reduce the driver’s ability to see pedestrians and
cyclists, and higher headlights can startle other road users,” Mr Daley said.

Mr Daley said any vehicle being raised or lowered would require certification stating the
modifications conform to safety standard requirements.

“The changes also mean any modifications must meet specific requirements such as the
vehicle having at least 10 centimetres ground clearance.

“Vehicles raised above the 5 centimetre limit will only be granted conditional registration for
use under specified conditions like competing in an off road competition,” Mr Daley said.

    Ummmmm, not happy with that........

I wonder where that leaves lifts that have been there for years?

Surely they can not make it retrospective....... virtually impossible thing to police.

I'm sure the main stream suspension suppliers will just do blanket engineering certificates for their systems... much like the ARB Old Man Emu kit for the 200 series.

Next we will have to provide certificates of competency for packing the back of our cars, our camper trailers, caravans, roof rack baskets etc..........which also affect handling, braking, stability...............ahh stuff em

Re: New Laws for suspension upgrades

Classic case of laws bought in to control a very small percentage of the population. Yet we all have to pay for their stupidity.

Oh I've clearly noticed pedestrians magically popping out of existence now that I have raised suspension. It's the damnedest thing. I wondered what all that mess was on my bullbar....... What a complete load of rubbish! Words from someone who understands less than nothing. I can't see how suspension modification would severely impact visibility out the front windscreen.

I see a case for cars that have been severely dumped right down almost on top of their tyres. Several "hoons" at my work have done this and it gives me shivers just looking at it.

I also suspect that the Automotive engineering aspect of 4WD upgrades will be taken on by 4WD fitout workshops. Kits will be approved etc and it will be business as usual...... hopefully. Probably at an added cost to us though....

Police need extra support to deal with unroadworthy vehicles and extra patrolling. As soon as there is one small road incident at the moment the finger is all too often pointed squarely at the police. It stinks like rotten meat. Resource the Police properly so they can do their jobs. Leave the greater good Australia the heck alone! Punish those who do the wrong thing! Isn't that how it's supposed to work????

                      Don't punish everybody!

Re: New Laws for suspension upgrades

I was in at opposite lock today and a guy there mentioned that the RTA has advised them that these rules will affect them (as fitter/suppliers) at the end of august. Perhaps they are giving suspension supplier/fitters a bit of a grace period. He basically said I still have a month left for fitting.

I was going to make new rubber my next purchase but instead I think I'll need to do a lift asap. Hmmm...great, a lifted Prado with highway tyres.

I'll call opposite lock to get more clarification and post back here.....

What happens when the RTA demand an inspection and want proof of when the work was done? Will Opposite Lock back you up?

I believe allowable tyre size changes are covered under separate rules.

the increase in overall tyre radius is added to the trim height to show the lift relative to the ground
While I was right, I was still wrong. ops:
