    Re: Best polish to use

I've got a couple of bush pinstripes down one side. What do I need to do to 'polish' them out?

thanks Hutch the bull bar is exactly like that....it is the base of it that is the worst....tried two different types of autosol over the weekend....needs lots and lots of elbow grease thats for sure...lots of hard work...some one recommended using sand paper on it, like to buff it down....not so happy with that outcome...looks like it is the marine polish's turn for a try

        Re: Best polish to use

I found that when I went to a specialist auto paint shop they advised best. To get out scuffs and rubs from 4wding I used a rejuvenator polish which is a really good cut & polish compound. My GLX is black also and you could see EVERY mark before. Now, no more than usual road use wear in paint.

The only thing that got close to workingn was when i brought a little polishing pad to attach to the drill for some serious buffing.

            Re: Best polish to use

I used to polish up the exhausts on my old motorbike and I used autosol and one of those plasticy green brilo? pads you use for washing up. ( I used the generic brand) it works quite well. Hard work and filthy fingers but it works. I also used a polishing pad on a drill then finish by hand....this was on stainless steel though.

              G'day OGG.

It requires a little more than just a polish imho...

After my first pinstriping experience, I was quite sure the marks were permanent... until I spent much of a day using Meguiar's products and the best scratch remover on the market, RE-PO Paint Doctor (with carnauba wax)... no more pin-stripes or abrasions. A couple of minor marks persist, but no pinstripes.

About twice each year, I'm pedantic with my car-detailing, which takes most of the day. Most other times, I simply use hose and brush to remove the grime and about once a month mix some car-wash for a better clean and touch up the wax as needed with Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer. The products I use last at least a couple of years for two cars... and the kids may borrow it for their cars too.

              The products I use are:
              1. Soft Wash Gel - though when I'm finished with this bottle, I'll buy their NXT Generation Car Wash [/*:m:1uvqm13k]
              2. Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner[/*:m:1uvqm13k]
              3. RE-PO Paint Doctor (with carnauba wax) for deeper scratches and abrasions[/*:m:1uvqm13k]
              4. Deep Crystal Polish[/*:m:1uvqm13k]
              5. NXT Tech Wax 2.0[/*:m:1uvqm13k]

I was extremely impressed with the results.

For slightly deeper marks, I bought a spray can of paint (Silver Ash - 1D4 for my car) and a quality clear coat. I've used that on a few chips and rear-bumper scrapes.

I also recommend chatting to the guys at autObarn in Bundall. I asked if their paint expert could look at the marks on my car, and he provided numerous great tips.

              Cheers,
              LFaR.

                Re: Best polish to use

With regard to shining the alloy bullbars.

Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh (yeah it is spelled that way) gives you a greater cut than Autosol. So it's good for getting into highly dulled metalwork. BUT, and it's a fine difference, the NXT will not quite produce the same shine as the finer cut Autosol. You might have to get the bar into the sunlight to notice the difference but it's there. So the Idea is to cut all the dullness out with the NXT, maybe with the Meguiars drill-mounted polishing ball (can't remember its proper name) and then follow up with the Autosol. The alloy quality on the bumper section of Sovereigns is not as good as the hoop sections and uprights, so it will always look sort of blotchy when you get it into the light. The hoops and uprights though you will see your friggin face in. If you really want to go the whole distance, you then put a wax coating over the bar with something like the humble old turtle wax. If you don't do that then the first sprinkler drops or rain will leave mineralisation marks all over your hard work, and the only way to get rid of those of is, you guessed it, another polishing session. The wax makes the water bead off with a minimum of fuss.

I haven't done any research into the NXT and Autosol compounds. But the above is just what I have found over time.

                  Re: Best polish to use

I have a Prado Grande 08 model, pearl white finish and use the ICE polish.

Found it very easy to apply. It retained that molecular touch when water falls onto the bonnet for a good 3/4 months, so the price of a tin very economical.

                  Cheers,

                    Re: Best polish to use

I have been using good old turtle wax for the last 26 years. Our cars always looks great and the paint on our 1999 90 series was as good as new when I sold it last year.

Our cars are generally solid colour and not metallic or mica.

I have had classic prize winning show cars that I only used Turtle wax on.

                      NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is silicone! you may as well spray it with armour all!!! not to mention a nightmare if it every needs to be repaired.

carnauba waxes are awesome, great depth and shine, but be prepared to maintain it every 6 weeks! so lets leave all the carnauba's to the guys with concourse level prado's (me  )

i suggest using a paint sealant. they don't have that beautiful warm gloss the carnauba's do, but are long lasting and debatably offer some more protection. I'd suggest a product call Wolfgang deep gloss sealant. $45 and will do your prado 20 times over.

i'm a nutcase and spend $350 on a tab of wax for mine, (see my build up) but you really need to be prepared to stay on top of it. i am seriously thing of using the WDGS and topping it with wolfgangs fusion wax. this way I'll kinda get the best of both worlds.

check this guy out www.waxit.com.au same company as car care products, just dave really knows his shit. give him a call.

                        Re: Best polish to use

When I bought my Prado new a year ago I went with Protech paint protection. This gives it a very hard protection layer that only requires a normal wash and it comes up unblemished.
Even in the scrub when I was certain the side paintwork was scratched for sure I was surprised at the total lack of marks. Worth considering if your car is fairly new.

I spent all of yesterday giving my baby a polish with Meguiar's Wet Look polish.

                          Really makes a difference

I may have a nasty oil leak at the moment - and crap performance - but you can see your face in my Meguiar's Shine :P :P
