    Hi All,

First time poster, long time reader .

The search function didn’t work for me so forgive me if this is a rehash, however I am in the market for a good CB.

What are people running these days and what is recommended?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Anything from GME or Uniden. Pretty much choose a unit that fits in with how you want to organise your dash. I chose a GME XRS radio which has a remote mount hand piece to keep the dash tidy.

I've got the cheapest GME 80ch UHF you can buy: model TX3100

      It has been perfect.

Good value package, including an aerial:

My Auto electrician (who fits out many of our states fire and emergency vehicles DELWP, CFA, SES etc.) recommended the Icom IC450 and I have been very happy with it. It's a tough bit of kit and doesn't feel cheap and plastic like in your hand like some radios. Its an 80 channel and has voice guidance and can even record up to 5 minutes of conversation. Icom make all types of radio communication equipment not just UHF radios so they know their stuff and they are manufactured in Japan.

It is also not over priced like some brands *cough* GME. Having said that, I do run a 6.6dBi GME antenna on my Prado.

I got mine from an Australian supplier on eBay and used a 5% off sitewide code (PICK5) although I see there is a 10% off discount code valid until tomorrow (MADE4YOU)

It was advertised at $299 with free shipping but ended up being $284 with the 5% off. Pretty good price for a quality radio.

I mounted the handset with a clic-on mount so there are no holes in my dash.

I used a RJ45 pass through connector from Lightforce in the dash

While Icom are cheaper than GME, I personally prefer to buy Australian... and GME are about as indestructible as they come, too.

Just picked up my new 2018 GLX yesterday and spec’’’d another GME (TX3350), I haven’t been able to fault them. However I’ve never heard a bad word about Icom either, they seem popular with emergency services which obviously says something.

I've run GME for years, had Unidens as well but Ive always found Unidens to not be as clear on TX and RX compared with the GMEs

I mounted mine above and to the right of the steering column and tucked the excess wire in between the gap of the steering wheel and dashboard- Totally hidden and works really well. A plug in the dash is a much cleaner look though if you don't intend to have it in there all the time.

I mounted my unit under the dash and drilled a small hole for the handset to come through

Some nice setups. I ended up finding a deal on an icom 400pro. An older model but within my budget. There is a nice spot low down in the dash of the 90 that I can hide it away. The 90 doesn’t have a lot of dash real estate, so I’m fitting a single din head unit to give me more room, I will mount my handset under the head unit

Ive had a gme in mine for 8 years, i had some issues with it about 2 years ago and took it to gme to get it repaired, they pulled it apart while i waited, fixed the problem and checked was all working in the car. They said they wouldnt charge me for the repair because it shouldnt have been needed even though it was well out of warranty. Given the service i got i would always buy another as they are an Australian company who back their product, couldnt speak highly enough of them.
