Impact on warranty?

G’day alll. I’m looking at buying a new VX in the next month or so and will be heAding off to the Kimberley around this time next year. In view of this I’m looking at putting a better set of shocks (with a small lift) under it and installing a pre fuel filter and catch can and a front diff lock. Does anyone know whether these upgrades will void the warrAnty?

You should be talking to the dealer you are buying it off. My dealer sells and installs fuel filters and catch cans, they will cover them and any warranty claims because they installed them. If you go to after market installers, Toyota are unlikely to cover anything that was changed or altered by non Toyota people.

BUT........it only becomes an issue IF the changes you made caused a warranty issue. eg a suspension change wont impact on an electrical issue. PS why do you need a diff lock for the Kimberley? If you are into hard High Country tracks maybe, but up north....no- save your money. Your car has great traction control. Mine has catch can and pre filter fitted and all the dealer has said is they are a good idea.

Just come back from my 9th trip to the Kimberley. If you are going to drive the Gibb River and the Kalumburu/Mitchell Plateau roads its worth while upgrading to a good suspension that can ride out the corrugations. You won't need a front diff locker, most Prados now have a rear diff locker anyway which is sufficient for just about any of the really remote rough tracks. If you are going heavily loaded (ie over the factory GVM) consider getting a legally 'compliant' GVM upgrade. Your dealer can arrange that. Your warranty and comprehensive insurance wont be worth anything in the advent of a mishap that attracts attention to your loading (they will ask). If you add a fuel pre-filter and catch can, it will be up to you to maintain them properly.

European tourists abound up there and they mostly drive relatively stock standard hire 4WDs. I've driven the Gibb River, Bungles, Keep River and other gravel roads in hire cars - stock Pajeros and Toyotas.They are adequate with the exception of spare tyres. You will need to let the tyres down a bit. And punctures from stones are common and a pleasure to replace in 35 degree heat and choking bulldust.

Dust, corrugations and tyres will be your biggest concerns, followed by wildlife and slow vehicles towing vans on the roads. The station resort/camping spots along the Gibb River Road say they repair tyres. However most tyres need to be replaced and they either don't keep enough stock or run out quickly in peak season, so carry a second wheel and (proper) tyre repair gear.
