ICOM IC-400 PRO radio (set up and programming)

I fitted a second UHF, the ICOM IC-400 Pro, basically the Rolls Royce of UHF radios. This is just a short over view of programming it from 40 to 80 channels, and setting the power to the legal max of 5 watts.

great video thanks. I recently made mine 80 channel using someone else's config file, great to see what some of the data means.

Do you please have a link to the antenna mount you used? I was tossing up whether to do this or not. Was also considering just making a mount on the spare wheel mount, and running it from there.

The Antenna tests out a lot better than the GME elevated feed and 6.5 DB antenna. For SWR etc, But both seem to perform around the same in actual use.

thanks. I don't uderstanda all that stuff. I bought a 400 pro at a local radio place and they sold me a 6db and a 3db i think. I used a z bracket on bonnet, and it worked great. That was on my vitara. I've been tryig to decide where to mount on the prado.

would a post on the rear wheel carrier be ok?

I'll only use it in convoy or emergency .

Post on the wheel carrier would be good, especially if it's a roof height, and the antenna if a ground independent one.

ok thanks. I figure I'd just use the coax I have, and just run a post up, and use the spring mount i have. I just wasn't sure about ground plane (don't understand that at all) but couldn't see how being mounted there would be worse than z bracket at bonnet, and probably better as it will be ~1m higher

Use a ground independent antenna, ie "elevated Feed" type. These days these are the most common type. This will eliminate or reduce the issue ground plain creates when not dead centre in the roof.

thanks. will check what type I have when the time comes (two young kids that dont sleep, so my toy time is very limited)
