  • DPF Regen/burn button question

    Hello everyone,

I got a 18' GXL with a factory installed DPF burn button.

I'm just wondering if I can press the manual dpf burn button whenever the dpf is nearly full even when without the system warning ⚠️ message?

For example the dpf% is like 98% full and I just got home and wont be driving anywhere far in the next day or so, can i just press the button so it can burn it off? Will that affect anything?

There's been mixed comments about whether pressing the button without the system warning will do anything. Some says the button won't do anything if there is no system warning message. Is that true?

    Cheers

tkhiem, Toyota have put out a manual that explains how the DPF works you can find a link to it here https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...102#post745102 see post #297.
But to answer your question, with the default setting a manual regen cannot be initiated until the PM level reaches 156%. Automatic regens initiate at 100%. So basically your switch won’t work unless the auto regens fail and you will probably have the DPF fault light illuminated if that occurs.
You can, however, get the dealer to activate “custom mode” which will allow you to conduct a manual regen when the PM level reaches 28%. Hope that helps, cheers.

          Thanks mate.
This seems like what others have told me as well. Maybe I have to tell the dealer to activate that "custom mode"
          Cheers

DDS, I think so. I think you need a button to activate the burning process when required.

There seems to be two different "Custom Mode"s.

One comes with the recent ECU software update and is described in the update document. The screen will indicate to you when the ECU is doing a DPF Regen. But you have to ask the Dealer to enable that feature for you.

The other comes with the Manual DPF Button. As the document at the web link above tells, it will let you press the DPF button after the DPF reaches 28% saturation in order to initiate a Burn. But you also have to ask the Dealer to enable that feature. I've been to my Dealer 4 times now and they don't seem to have this second feature working for me.

                  Thanks for the info RPP.

The first one, where the screen indicates when the DPF Regen is happening, is it hard for them to activate that? That seems like what I would also like to do at this stage.

If down the track, if there is any problem with DPF, I will probably ask them to activate the 'second' manual DPF mode that you mentioned above.

dds, you do not need a DPF switch to activate “custom mode”. I have a 2015 GXL with 2.8ltr GD motor. I have done over 90,000 km. I have never had the DPF malfunction light come on in anger but have taken the vehicle back to the dealer twice for the white smoke issue. Most of my driving is outback touring and living in the Blue Mountains I do very few short trips. The reported DPF issues have always been at the back of my mind while touring remote areas. I have had every ECU update done as soon as they became available and when they offered “custom mode” I was very keen to have them activate it as, at last, I would have some indication as to what the DPF was doing. It took the dealership two goes to get it working but after the second attempt it seemed to work fine and the DPF MIL would flash during a regen. So I now have “custom mode” active.

Subsequent to that the dealership informed me that my request for the DPF switch had been approved. The same dealer installed the DPF switch and with custom mode active I can now perform a manual regen when the PM level reaches 28%, availability of a manual regen is indicated by the DPF MIL remaining illuminated for 5secs after start. I’ve got to say I am much happier knowing what the DPF is doing and having the ability to perform a manual regen if needed. That’s been my experience, cheers.

Just an anecdotal observation, when I picked up the keys after the DPF switch had been installed the service clerk told me the switch would not work unless the DPF MIL was illuminated. This might be true for a vehicle with default settings but I knew my vehicle had “custom mode” and it performs exactly as described in the Toyota DPF manual (definitely worth a read). I am not knocking the dealership but I think it’s a systemic problem and Toyota need ensure that those who service their vehicles and deal with customers are better informed themselves, there seems to be a lot of disinformation out there. Overall, though, I have to say I’m happy with the way I have been treated.
