Re: Roo Damage to Soverign Bar

Yeahp. That's about what I'd expect. Alloy bars are one-hit wonders there's no doubt. If that was me I'd really be looking at an ARB jobbie to replace it. Depends what you want though. The more I see the ARB bars the more I like em. Decent solid bits of gear. Sovereign's will take a modest hit, but really, you need to throw them away afterward because a secondary hit, especially in the same area, will cause havoc. That's why I'm toying with ditching mine. But they look nice I suppose. Some sort of ARB bar with brush bars combo and upgraded side steps is the way to go in my opinion. A few peeps around the traps, at the recent 4x4 action 4WD show in Perth, are of the opinion that the brush bars would be simple enough for a reputable roo-bar business to fit up to a Prado. But yeah... I don't even want to know what that might cost just now.

Re: Roo Damage to Soverign Bar

I am just back from the Canning Stock Route after a troble free crossing EXCEPT that by the end the sovereign bar was moving excessively on the LHS. Examination showed that one of the support bars at the outer end had cracked. Closer examination shows that in fact the square section mounted onto the left hand chassis rail had cracked at the bar end. A piece of crap! The question is : is this common? do Toyota supply that box section as a spare part? can it safely be welded? Whatever, I will have to pull the whole bar off to get at it by the look of it.OR, should I claim on insurance and get an ARB bar?
By the way, when I get the time I will do a trip report on the CSR- a fabulous trip and quite possible in the V6 provided you carry enoufg petrol [ 300 l all up] .

        G'day Neil,

This is a little off topic for this thread... Perhaps this post would be better placed in a new topic - "Sovereign Bar Mounts Cracked " (mods?).

This is the first time I've seen such a report, so I guess it's not a common fault. Any pics for the forum?

I gather you're out of warranty, but all the same I would be taking it into Toyota to at least get their opinion and cost estimate. The next stop should be your local smash-repairers; they ought to be able to give you the advice on whether it can be repaired and how much it will cost. Compare that with your insurance excess and possible increase in premiums to determine which is the best route to take. Choosing an ARB steel bar or the Sovereign alloy bar is more of a personal choice, with pros and cons both ways; fortunately this is discussed in other topics too.

No, I bought 2 2nd hand ones off here and replaced the buggered one and kept the the other for a spare. Toyota never knew about it until I took it in for the recall sometime later.[see the saga of dealer inepitude in the soverign bull bar recall section]. No doubt they did see dozens of dodgy ones though.I still haven't got around to increasing the gap from the 7mm the dealer dills fitted it at to the required 15mm but it will happen if ever it cools down.
