  • ShuRoo - experiences anyone?

On the back of looking at the current topic on the sovereign bar, and the recent one with the 150 smashed in, I was wondering if many have had genuine experiences with them. I used to have the little whistle things on the Rav4 and the plastic ones were useless but I think the better quality ones did work to an extent. I lived in Tassie then and never hit anything with that but with my old cruiser I'd hit many many wallabies and possums (as you do in Tassie) when I didn't have them. I'm assuming the Shuroo would be much better, but is it really worth the money? They cost ~$500 for the new model. I definitely need a bar first (not planning to rely entirely on a Shuroo) but looking at the sovereign pics I was surprised at the damage done.

    Hi FlyingBushPig

I have had ShuRoos fitted to previous vehciles (without bull bars). I travel on the Monaro highway south of Canberra on a daily (or more) basis, and this area is fairly heavy with Roo's at the normal times - dusk to dawn. In 18 years travel on this road, I have only hit one roo (at 8.00am) in the morning. I did not have a ShuRoo fitted at that stage. Over the years , I have had several close shaves, with ShuRoo fitted, without, and with the sonic whistlers.

One occassion I recall (with ShuRoo's on) is a large Roo in the middle of the highway that I spotted and virtually drove up to (within 10 feet). He wast just staring back at me, and did not move until I bipped horn at him. I do have strong lights fitted, and I think he may have been "stunned" in the lights though. It indicated to me though that the ShuRoo did not "move him on"

Since having the Prado's with bullbars (120, now 150) I have not considered fitting a ShuRoo, as IMO, they have proved to be unnessesary for my purposes. As we all know, Roo's are totally unpredicatable, so you just need to be alert.

We have Shuroo's fitted to all our work cars and yet we still have plenty of animal strikes. They do get a lot of stares from people when driving around town with them on as they are hard wired in and can not turn them off. I remeber reading somewhere that they are only effective at speeds under 80km.

        Flyingbushpig,
If you do a search under Shoo Roo you will also get some more opinions. IMHO they work but I have only used the sonic less than $5 ones you stick on the bull bar.

I do'nt think most people know how the Shoo Roo like devises work. Let me explan ... you need to fit these devises onto your bullbar, a pair is recommended, mounted approximatly 900 - 1 mtr apart .
Now your covered. The're not intended to be a "set and forget devise", you still need to be aware of any roos in close proximity.
Should you now be driving down the road, and become aware of a roo, either crossing your path, or stationary in the centre of the road. You should do the following ... stop as fast as possible, wind down your window, and shout out at the top of your lungs " SHOO ROO!"

            Luv it!

That's pretty much my experience too. Driving from Charleville toward Brisbane at about 4am meant there were lots of opportunities to see if the ShuRoo worked. Whilst I didn't hit a Roo, I needed on several occasions to perform some emergency braking.

Also during the day, I'd try to notice the Roo's reaction as I came up to them. I'm no Roo expert, but I'd have to say they looked just the same whether I had the ShuRoo or not.

My conclusion... a waste of time, though a novelty all the same.

It makes me think their ought to be some better evidence that these things work. Maybe we can convince Jeremy Clarkson to give 'em a test .

Baz you forgot there are two other devices called the Remington and Winchester. They are not mounted to the front of the vehicle but are kept inside it. You still follow some of the same priciples as you have outlined above ie stop as fast as possible but you actually have to get out of the car and point the device at the roo. Once you have achieved alignment there is a lever or perhaps trigger for want of a better word that you pull which after some practise is quite an effective way of dispensing with the roos. Either of the two devices mentioned above are effective as each other.

Interesting stuff. Haven't tried the device where you need to get out of your car, I'm sure there's a way to mount this device as well..oh, that's called a tank..

I searched here through google and got a lot of opinions but not a lot of actual experience so thanks for some genuine opinions after using them. seems I'm better to stick to the bar and possibly some of the $5 jobs.
I reckon it's more of a mythbusters thing myself. Would be interesting to see some data as to if they work in true tests.

My last company we had a large fleet 2000 plus vehicles as the safety manager we performed a test of fitting a percentage of country vehicles with Shoo Roos (the actual ultra sonic ones) after crunching 2 years of accident data and anecdotal interviews we came up with the following

At low speed to about 70kph you can turn it on and you will get a reaction from the animal in question (a lot or reports of dogs and cats running off the street in surburbia)

At 110kph there was little to no reaction from the animal reported and any reaction could not be distinguished between the shoo roo or the general noise of the vehicle
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

That seems to be what a few people have been saying too. I think I usually have the ability of stopping at speeds lower than 70Kph before an animal strike (unless they jump out at last minute without warning) and I imagine any strikes that will cripple the vehicle completely will happen at faster than 70Kph, meaning the unit really doesn't warrant the cost in the end.

I know for sure that they don't work on tame kangaroos, I was staying with friends in a caravan park at Mataranka, where they've got some tame roo's wandering about, one of our group had a shu-roo fitted we turned it on with a roo right in front of the vehicle, and while you can hear it if your close enough... the roo barely twitched an ear.

Thought i would join this one, they were all the rage when i was a young in. They do not work. I have just done a driver training program for work, the instructor (who is an ex crash investigator) talked about research that proves they don't work. Thats good enough for me, i'll save my money.

The company I work for used them on a couple of jobs west of the ranges and they do work. Like anything though they are not perfect and some roos don't seem to be affected. After we fitted the shuroos we had much fewer roo strikes but still some. The funniest was one of our guys came across a troop of roos. He slowed down, switched the shuroo on and off, flashed his lights (it was dawn), hit the horn, the works. Finally came up to them and had to stop completely because the road was blocked. Tried all these again and finally a big red bounced over to the car and kicked the crap out of the front guard while he was stationary! Brilliant! He didn't cop much flak for that. Much.

What I found was that speed is a big factor, go too fast and there isn't any effect at all. Certainly over 100 and the things are pretty much useless but then who drives that fast when roos are around?

                              Hi All,

Some of the information on this topic is totally wrong.

                              EG.

The Shu-Roo Unit is a slim line Electronic Unit which will fit nearly any vehicle.

For a 4wd, only 1 unit is required and you don't and never had to mount them 1m apart!!! Unless you are taking about the cheap non-electric units.

They have a on/off switch which is installed inside the cabin of the vehicle so you can choose when to have it on.

I know as I have had purchased them for our company Trucks and 4wds all the models from the series 1 to current.
I have seen them at work on all roads and dirt tracks, up to speeds of 110kms/h.

The Shu-roo is not effective in areas of heavy planted trees/ forests, as the ultra-sonics just bounce of trees and the Roo + other animals eg sheep, don't know where the noise is coming from, and will come at you in a confused state.

While they do work, they are not always 100% effective and you still need to drive will caution, just incase.
