  • Query on Auto Transmission Temperatures

I will doing some towing and I have set up Torque Pro app on an unused android phone.

I have pan and torque converter temperature equations similar to those that have been posted a few times in this Forum.
Everything appears sensible. ie Engine temperature and both pan and torque converter temperatures are all the same, if a cold start.

While not towing on highway driving, engine is at 86C, pan is 91C, converter 91-92C. Ok I think.
While waiting a red light after this weekend's highway travel, still in Drive, pan temperature shows as about 102C and converter temperature at about 104-105C.
    Would those be correct?

Sounds about right if a load. When was trans fluids last changed? Should do every 40-50k kms. Fitting a torque converter lockup will help keep temps down. Stocklock do a good unit.

      Hi Piggy,
It's a new car. Bought late July 2019 . Only just under 8,000km on the clock. Booked for first regular service next week.

My June 2019 GXL is pretty much the same and it's the unlocked TC that heats things up quickly.
Looking into one of the new tri speed Stocklock units !

If its a hot day the trans will sit higher temps. Mine reguarly gets in the low 100's on a 35 plus day. on my Prado and 200 series.

Thanks all. Yep, reasonably hot day last Sunday when I was travelling. 33-34C outside temperature was on the dashboard.

Some mods have been thought about but not until a little further through the warranty period. Dealer Service Manager gave a warning about fitting stuff and impact on warranty claims prior to the fitting of a catch can. I went ahead anyway with that one. I made inquiries about a engine remap or a chip but even one provider gave a warning. His Ford Ranger had a major engine problem luckily covered by warranty before he did a remap.

When I'm driving around undulating countryside @ 100-110Km/hr its common for the Torque Converter fluid to sit 110-120C.
In S4 it will drop to around 100 plus or minus a few C, but revs go up.

Every transmission specialist I've talked to says fit an ATF heat exchanger.
Every Toyota dealer workshop mgr I've talked to says don't bother its fine, maybe have the fluid changed every 80-100K km.

                  RPP,

                  Thanks

I had a good run with an auto transmission shop with my old series 90. Regularly at 40k service intervals. No problems with the Trasnmission even with some significant towing for that cars capacity. Traded it in at close to 390k kms.
My transmission mechanic said auto coolers are good, but he said so were more regular services. Prado service handbook says 100k km for towing and hard service life.
