  • Generator with Robin ey40 motor

    I have a genset with a robin ey40 motor.

    It's big, it's heavy and it's loud.

just wondering on the off chance if anyone has experience with these and have any ideas on better muffler arrangements. I can't do much on the size and weight though.

Possibly talk to a muffler shop regards something custom, from memory those engines were for industrial use so not designed to be quiet.
Most domestic gensets will have some form of soundshield to reduce engine noise but I would think trying to add one would quickly become more expensive than its worth.
Especially once you start to design air flow for cooling and combustion while factoring in noise suppression they become complex.

Yeah I resurrected a 7 KVA Crommelin/Subaru (Robin) site generator from broken parts when I worked for a large hire company as we had a major power outage here a few years ago. Used it a few times as necessary but it was far too loud. Ended up rehoming it to someone for next to nothing and replaced it with a 2.2KVA Honda. It's not just the exhaust, the whole engine was noisy as well being air cooled.

yep - that the issue. so far this thing costs me $40 and works perfectly (after i took the carbie apart and gave it a clean). So i have room to spend some coin. thinking a proper muffler and build a gyprock box around it with cooling fans might get the noise down to the point that it can be used after a cyclone to keep the fridges and freezers running without incurring death threats from the neighbors.

If it will only be for emergency use then size should not be an issue.
maybe try designing a canopy that has sound absorption foam or similar internal lining that you can disassemble when not in use. Being air cooled you need good airflow and air space around the complete unit. You will need baffles like an S bend to try and "capture" the sound waves but still allow air flow.

Sounds like a good project for a Coronavirus created Corona refreshed isolation job

Yep - this is a bit of a hobbie whilst we minimize trips out of the house. Will only be used for power outages by cyclones etc, but the noise out of these "construction" type generators would not be good for neighborly relations. And the unit is too big and noisy for camping applications.
