  • Pre-collision system malfunction (Prado 2019)

Has anyone gotten the "Pre-collision system malfunction" message in the dash and lost cruise control etc? Read a bit about it and have booked it in at the dealer to have a look, but is there any way I can reset this myself?

Kinda late, and you probably figured it out by now. And this isn't an answer but a warning.
I had a malfunction with the pre collision system in my 2017 Lexus GX which caused it to brake as I was pulling out of my garage, there was absolutely nothing in front of me but the car just stopped as I was getting up to speed. If you haven't fixed it, please do as soon as you can because this could happen on the highway or any other dangerous place.

      Hi there
my first at this. Couldnt resist any longer.
I have sept. 2020 prado gxl. About 4000km on the clock. On 2 occasions i have has the pre collision malfunction warning come up. Vehicle itself faultless. I have not been using cruise control. Cleaned toyota badge at front with a damp cloth to remove insect splatter. By the 3rd engine start and run fault message cleared. Didnt take it into dealer as they would have charged me. Have recorded incidents though.

Malfunction within the warranty period? Why would that be chargeable? I'd be taking the vehicle to a dealer for investigation. The event will remain in the ECU log of events for them to analise.

I will get it checked when the 10000km service is due. The dealer is fully aware of the issue we had and what I did to clear the fault messages. They just said that there was likely to be a charge if they put it on their magic machine. I didnt question that at the time of the phone conversation with them.
In the meantime the Prado is fantastic. The upgraded motor is great. Mind you the wiring system is like a telephone exchange compared to my previous 2004 120 1kzte Prado.

This is a known fault Peterz and I would be taking it to the dealer. They won’t charge you for warranty claims if there is a fault on a brand new vehicle. That’s pure nonsense. It’s bought about by a low engine oil pressure as some of the earlier 150kw 2020 models had 0w-20 oil put in them causing a low pressure alarm that turns off your cruise control and pre collision system. Apparently there is a software fix coming as well. Check out the last ten minutes of this video.

Thank you Pudley for your interesting useful information. I watched the video and noted that he said the fault comes up at higher speeds. Thinking back to my situation i was traveling in the 90 to 110kph range on hilly twisty uphill down dale very good bitumen when the fault message came up. Twice now. Has not come up on the flat. Oil level is perfect. Oil condition on dipstick looks good. Oil grade is whatever put in new. Sept 20th 2020 build date. 4000km on the clock. Engine runs and sounds fine. Not towing and fine weather. Low 30s temperature.
I shall speak with the dealer in an assertive but polite manner when we get past the public holidays. My old 1kzte 2004 prado was so super reliable. I have very high expectations of this one.

Yeah make sure you speak to them. Toyota has been pretty quiet on this one and they brushed it off and changed my oil to 0w-30. I haven’t had a problem since but low oil pressure can’t be good. Still seems strange to me that Toyota (one of the worlds largest manufacturers) with a car that’s been around for ten years and an engine in one form or another that’s been around for 5 years can’t get the engine oil correct.

Update: I took my car in for Toyota to have a look at it. They fixed it free of charge (I wouldn't have accepted anything else) and asked me if I'd been off-road with it when it happened. We were at Moreton Island when the message showed up, and Toyota told me that the alignment of the wheels had gotten a bit out of whack most likely from an off-road bump or jerk. I didn't abuse the car at all out there, and even though you cruise through some bumpy tracks there was never anything beyond what I expect this car to handle day in and day out.

If this becomes a regular occurence everytime we head off the suburbia bitumen I will be very disappointed.

I'm hearing you. After 247000km of trouble free travel with my 120 2004 prado I too will be bitterly disappointed. Masses of electronics is so unnecessary. What happened to driving skill. Anyway mine is ok at the moment. Gotta make an appointment with the dealer. You need to be able to get around these issues when in the bush by yourself.

Well doesn’t seem too isolated. Two week old Prado and on first drive over 50 kms today got the Engine check light, cruise malfunction, pre collision off, DPF full. In final stages near home gear changes affected. Not happy at all. Hope it’s easily sorted. Off to dealer tomorrow. Oh and off topic but can someone please help me to shut the traffic warnings off. Didn’t know I was such a bad driver or how many school zones I pass on a Sunday. She’s not as smart as she thinks she is.

I have a Nov 2020 Prado GXL and encountered similar problems to those above on 2 occasions whilst towing my caravan. Car would go into limp mode. Error code message said low oil pressure problem. Took it back to Toyota who said there was an issue with the type of oil in the engine and incorrect response from oil sensor causing the main computer to send car into limp mode. A reprogramming of engine management computer seems to have done the job. Car runs beautifully and no more towing issues.

Nov 2020 Prado VX - driving along the beach today at circa 35kmh. Some shudder as vehicle struggled in some soft sand. Few minutes later pre collision system malfunction warning comes on. When looking at wheel direction on dash the wheels are pointing right when steering wheel is dead centre. Will ring Toyota tomorrow - kinda annoying. Sand was super easy.

So if you have a bullbar with spotlights this will affect the operation of the pre collision system??

We just got this malfunction on our new GXL Prado (4800kms) today, towing our van up Cunningham's Gap on the way to Stanthorpe. Called into Toyota at Warwick and they knew all about the fault. They hooked the car up to the computer and updated the software and it's all fixed. They've had quite a few people come in with the same problem and same scenario......going up the steep range towing a van.
