Lift regulations, this is what has just been sent through to me. They need to actually drive a vehicle that has had its suspension fitted with after market gear and even a slight lift. I received this today as well. Without starting a war, I think it is a good result. Unless I have misread it, what I have gleaned in sumary is:
:arrow: up to and including 50mm - basic certification e.g. if ARB installed it, a simple statement on the receipt (bit like window tinting)
:arrow: 51mm-150mm - engineer certificate and blue slip - pretty onerous, but probably not a bad idea. I have seen heaps of 4-6" lifted cruisers and patrols that have not been done properly and quite frankly, are an accident waiting to happen.
:arrow: over 150mm - it's all over red rover - and so it should be!! Why anyone needs a lift over 6" on a street car is beyond me.
I would even question anything over 4", but I won't :twisted:

Interesting & I think a reasonable compromise.....
I see that if you go over 50mm you may need to pass a severe lane change test..... ISO 3888

I wonder how my standard Prado 90 with 9 year old suspension would handle that as it is? In fact it probably would be better WITH aftermarket suspension in this test. :shock:

Hi Tassie tiger, sorry just reread it again, I thought they were saying a 50ml lift would require an engineers certificate...But in saying that most 4wd's handle and drive better with aftermarket suspension even with a 50ml lift. I know a fair few people who have either patrols or cruisers and a fair few have 3in lift, even a tour company my wife and I have used on numerous occasions has a 3 inch lift in his patrol, anymore then that personally I dont think is required for touring, carrying loads or general everyday driving. Yes D4D was a bit concerned about that myself as mine has it as well. I could get mine to cut in before and after the lift and doesnt seemed to have changed anything. Doesnt cut in any later or earlier then prior to the lift. Regards Steve

Hi there StormyKnight, I can definately say mine handles better, doesnt wallow over speed humps, doesnt nose dive under brakes, and can hold the rear end up with both tanks full where as before it would drop down considerbly, bounce over speed bumps. Regards Steve M

Yeah Andy must aggree with anything over a 3 in lift, I dont see the purpose in say a 4 or more as they definately seem to have extreme body roll and dont think Id like to be in one in an emergency situation, but then again I have never owned one with such a lift so maybe Im wrong in my assumption ??? I think if done by proffesionals then probably all right but then you get people who just wack in some 4inch or more springs, wack some shockies in and go for it. Regards Steve M

You will still require an engineers cert for only a 50mm lift if it involves a body lift (blocks, spacers, etc.) of any kind instead of going down the more common route of suspension mods. (Any lift involving the body requires the same certification as a 50-150mm lift).
Found the Road Vehicle Descriptor sheet for the 120 (also noticed it was found for another suspension thread too). The official 'trim' measurements (those used to determine the amount of lift allowed - measured from centre of wheel to top of wheel arch at unladen mass) is 522mm and 558mm front and rear respectively. Thus, according to the new regs, the max lift without a cert will result in measurements of 572mm and 608mm front and rear. Anything lifted between 50mm and 150mm needs an engineers cert, but it also then requires a check by an Authorised Examiner at an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS) - i.e. a 'blue slip' inspection. The vehicle MAY then have conditions imposed on the registration that may restrict the use ON-road and road related areas. Where did you find the hight sheet?
