These 1kz's are like the nissan zd30, my head has gone on my 90 series, 103k serviced by the book plus I change oil and filter every 5k. I pulled the radiator out thinking it might have possibly been slightly blocked, picked it up and bloke said clean as a whistle, he removed top tank and so forth. I put back in, new radiator cap took for a quick squirt down the freeway got back home overflow bottle chockers again so I would say its the exhaust pressurizing the system as the temp is fine the needle doesnt move, the oil is clean no milkiness, and the water in radiator is fine. Told wife Im going to trade it in, I Was quoted roughly 3g's maybe a tad more to repair it, stuff that, and what for it to happen again. Toyota should have done a recall on these motors as they know about it, Im thinking toyota as bad as nissan when it comes to rectifying a known fault. Should have kept the old hilux 89 model 2.8d with 300,000 thou on it not a thing went wrong with it. Im going petrol next time, diesel is way overpriced now (ripping us off as usual at the pump) and the cost of repairs and servicing is way over the top compared to petrol. I dont tow anything and if I did then Id where the extra cost of fuel at the time. My mate gets 11.2 out of his 06 VX 120 series freewaydriving I get 10.2 doing 100k put the foot down anymore and my economy is more then his. Not sure Im getting another prado or what yet. Id like a hilux but the d4d's have their problems as well epcially injector problems and at $1000 each for get it. Maybe a V6 hilux. Regards steve

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
S%^t Steve, sorry to hear about your woes mate. Was this an issue with the 90 series 1KZs or is it also an issue with the 120 series? I had this problem some years ago on an old bomb I had and I used chemweld. Regardless what people say, it worked and stopped the water loss issue as you have described. Bodgy I know, but I got many more years out of it. I'd say you have hairline cracks in the head somewhere.Black 2003, TD, GXL Prado

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
HI steve. The sad fact is that all manufacturers have problems with their vehicles. As a mechanic I saw lots of different engines malfunction for no apparent reason.Originally posted by Steve MThese 1kz's are like the nissan zd30, my head has gone on my 90 series, 103k serviced by the book plus I change oil and filter every 5k.
Have you taken it to a cooling system specialist? Worth them running a diagnostic on it.
It may be that you have a pin hole in the head from poor casting, a small failure in the head gasket or a hair line crack that only opens under pressure. Either way they should be able to give you a good idea of the problem.
Have you re-torqued the head? Is the engine fan working properly? Do you have spotties in front of the rad?
If it were me I would check the above. Then replace the thermostat and radiator cap with genuine items from Toyota. Check the thermostat in a pot on the stove before you instal. Replace the coolant with genuine from Toyota.
If that fails then the head will probably have to come off to be pressure tested.

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
Hi Andy, yeah it is a know issue with the 90. I dont know if any 120's have had the issue or not ?? Im not spending 3 to 4 g on it to happen again. I am taking tomorrow off work and will see what I can find, maybe a 120 petrol or hilux dual cab (I miss the ute) I cant sell it privately as I would feel so guilty of selling it with a major problem and some poor other buggar has to pay to get it repaired. Think Ill just trade it at one of the bigger dealers, they rip us off enough with servicing so they can pay to repair it. I new they had head issues but I was intending to keep another couple of years then get rid of it, I didnt expect it to go at 100 thou, friggn joke, not sure yet but I may even trade it back on a 90 series but petrol that way I can swap everything back over, bloody suspensions only 2 months old and the snorkel. I like the grunt the 120 petrol has and they are cheaper to run then the 90 series petrol but it will cost me another couple of grand to fit out a 120 or whatever I get. apparantly they havnt redesigned the head on the diesel so whats to say it doesnt happen again and I intend some where down the line of getting a van or whatever and personally I think the 1kz is underpowered for towing anyway so will just have to pay the fuel diffenence when I do tow,Regards Steve

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
Taking it for a final check tomorrow morning where they put this thing on the radiator and it will tell them if it has any exhaust emissions (if thats the correct term) in the water or not, apparantly it changes colour, like a tube thingy. Driving lights have been on since day one, bought a new rad cap yesterday. If the viscous coupling on the fan wasnt working it would be running hot, if the thermostat was stuffed it would either be running hot due to it not opening or running cooler then normal due to it been wide open. Radiator was clean as, not one core was blocked he said was in extremely good condition (he removed top tank) to inspect and clean. It has always had genuine coolant in it. Im not even putting new coolant in it, Im not wasting the $$$ for them to dump it when they have to do the head, infact if its confirmed tomorrow 100% that its the head I wont be spending another $$ on it, I will strip the bullbar off it, cargo barrier, lights, uhf, only thing Im pissed about is the suspensions only about 2 months old as well as the snorkel. I more pissed that it has been serviced every 5 oil and filter, and been extremly well serviced and yet it still went at 100 thou, I thought at least it would be in the high 100's which is when I was intending to get rid of it. Regards Steve

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
Hi there tassie tiger, not sure how to take your reply, but I preuming you thought I was having a go at your first reply ???? Definately wasnt the case, if you read it that way I apoligize for my wording. All help and replys are greatly appreciated by you all. I am no mechanic but have a base idea of how things work. My main concern is say its just the head gasket and they replace that and all ok how long or how many klms before the actual head gets a crack in it and Im up for another repair only next time wil be alot more expensive. I have decided to get the final check done in the morning for gas detection in the cooling system, if its detected then obviously the head or gasket has gone, I will be trading it in and getting rid of it. I will either then buy a 120 V6 or hilux SR5 duel cab ute also V6. Again sorry if my previous reply come across as been a no it all or abrupt but wasnt meant come across that way. I am pissed its gone so maybe is coming across in the way Im replying ??? Regards steve

I did a large part of the Gibb River Road in a Camira station wagon (1.6L) back in 1986  . The only thing that turned me back was a river flowing at 2 metres. We sat and watched a group float a Kombi van across before deciding it was a bit too deep.

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
LOL would have been an adventure I bet. My old girlfriends dad bought one brand new he loved it her mum hated it, like all cars they have their problems, I remember his blowing some really bad smoke (valve stem seals) with very little klms on it, was fixed under warranty with numerous other things. In the end he hated it like his wife but they kept it till its wheels fell off so to speak. I remeber a few people saying to me before we bought the prado (we were looking at discos) dont buy one of those TDI discos their really bad and blow heads, mmm so do toyotas with a 1kz motor in them. Regards Steve M

Re: Another head gone on a 1kz
Yeah mate all baaaaad. Head definately goooone. Waiting on quote (should be tomorrow) but Im expecting around the 3 to 3 & 1/2 mark for repairs which is brand new head (blank) so using all my valves etc on the new head. Getting it done at Scott Donney's auto at St Marys. He did some work for me on the old V6 prado and no him from Lander Toyota, he's extremely fussy with his work you could eat your lunch off his workshop floor (no mechanics talking on mobiles or blaring radios in his workshop your there to concentrate and do your work no stuffing around lol. So will fill you in when I get the quote. Was looking at tradin it in (as per my dummy spit in previous posts, settled a bit now lol but still pissed its happened with such low klms) but with having to trade it (as I wouldnt sell it privately knowing the problem) I was only offered around the 21k mark on average (3 dealers) I thought by the time we pay transfer costs, bullbar, lift, snorkel, tyres etc again I will hit the 3 to 3 1/2g mark anyway so might as well keep for another year or two then get some $$$ back in the bank then think about it, Will defiantely get rid of it before the 200 mark, Im thinking hilux next time (miss the space and easy to throw crap in the back, bikes etc)but still next time will be petrol. Still want to chip it and exhaust in the meantime for some more grunt up hills.............Regards Steve M
