Also wise to carry a few pre-cut pieces with you just in case it breaks or goes missing.

I wonder if glad wrapping the panels, lights, spotties will assist in bug removal (assuming that you aren't using the spotties as I'd imagine that it would melt the glad wrap). Maybe on the windscreen as well assuming that there was no rain...??? Then when it's done it's job, peel off and apply another layer.

Glad wrap?
Spray some silicone spray onto a cloth and wipe over the frontal parts, it will help prevent the bugs from sticking to the duco and plastic. Don't put anything on the windscreen except maybe some rainex.
You could go to FPR or DJR (V8 supercar teams) and get some of the windscreen peel-offs that will probably cost a small fortune.

Just got back from thr desert up near Wiluna. The rain has brought out millions of flying ants. They don't die when they hit the car, they just crawl into every little space and start looking for a spot to build a nest. And the bees, thousands of those too - smacking against the grill and windscreen and depositing a big yellow blob. And when you stop, the red ants come along and crawl all over the car in their quest to collect all the insect debris. Got to love nature.

Along the lines of Bushbashers suggested silicon spray, We were advised by a friend to apply a cooking spray like (Pure & Simple) To the front of the vehicle to make the clean up easier. I wish I had also sprayed the under bar level and suspension components, these pests get into every thing.

Another bit of trivia: extensive "scientific" investigations with my 90 series a couple of years back (locust plague at Swifts Creek) revealed 80 kph to be the magic speed. 79kph - bounce off. 81 kph - splat! Found I could happily drive through the biblical swarm at 75-80 kph no worries.

Probably not a cure for radiator bugs, but a splattered one is worse than a stunned one!

One quick way to find out if the airflow is restricted with shadecloth - rough cut piece, a couple of cable ties and a quick drive around for an hour or so wtaching the temp gauge closely..... Better to do it around home than out on the tracks for sure.

Genuine Toyo part was $120 or so from memory.

The genuine one has a beautiful hole the size of the Toyota Logo and sits in between the driving lights and seems to attract locusts. I cleaned mine the day after Christmas and had to drop from front plate of the winch bar to let them all out after removing them from the radiator. The collection ontop of the plate was quite impressive.

After all this advise, I reckon I only hit about ten of the little sods. Won't need anything for the return trip. I have to say, whoever doesn't love these motors has to be thick in the head. Pulling over a tone of Jayco camper at 100km/h and still getting 900 kms out of the tanks is just the best.

In honor of the very talented lady, Lea, I decided to repost these photos of Rob's bug-bra which suits the prado's ARB deluxe bar...
Lea was very kind and agreed to make 2, and sent one my way ready for the SA PPer Robe trip.

They work exceptionally well at keeping the bugs out of the radiator! As we hit a few on the way over...



Worth a try if your handy with a few stitches (which Rob and I certainly aren't)...
