    Re: Bull Bars Under Threat

The move is based on improving pedestrian and cyclist safety in the event of a collision. Safety is of course an important consideration but I think these proposed laws are completely inappropriate for Australian conditions which have little in common with European cities. The plastic nudge bars being promoted that do conform to these Euro standards look completely inadequate to me particularly if a roo darts out in front at 100kph.

            Re: Bull Bars Under Threat

Lets hope there is some thought into how they will work it out, while you dont need bullbars in the city (except come in handy in carparks for people who cant drive) there are times when we go away and the bullbar comes in handy for fishing rods, spotlights, UHf arial mount, and depending on were you go outback makes me more comfortable to know I have it there for any roo strikes. Im sure the likes of ARB, TJM and the likes will be fighting like hell to stop a ban. Regards Steve

The survey doesn't work for NT with a post code of less than 1000. Left out again!

... look to the left, look to the right and look to the left again ...

I know its a little out dated and its been around for a while, but only if we could teach pedestrians this...
Maybe the need is not with banning bullbars?

Maybe they should ban cars altogether?

                  Re: Bull Bars Under Threat

What are the numbers likely to be for unfortunate pedestrians hit by cars, to be hit by one sporting a bar? I'd hesitate to say that the percentage of the overall incidents would be pretty low. Just another 4WD bashing session by someone IMO.

                  Cheers,

                    Re: Bull Bars Under Threat

We have just as many sleepers being run over as we do pedestrians.

Maybe we should just ban all cars, trucks, motor cycles and trains and be done with it. Then people could sleep safely on the roads and railways.

On another point - I wonder how many kids are bowled over by mum/dad reversing down the driveway as opposed to those pedestrians struck whilst jay-walking? Many pedestrians struck are usually hit late at night whilst staggering home drunk. The attack on vehicles fitted with bullbars is blame-shifting levelled at we 4 wheel drivers by a minority self interest group with a set agenda. We all know that removing bullbars will not have any "impact" in lowering the road toll.

                      Re: Bull Bars Under Threat

I think a lot of the pedestrian casualties only have themselves to blame.
Everywhere I look these days it seems people can't go anywhere without their Ipod in or texting on their phone as they walk, blissfully unaware of what is happening around them.
I recently witnessed one young girl who blindly walked straight into an oncoming car turning right at an intersection whilst texting but luckily for her she walked into the side of the car and was spun around and knocked to her knees by the impact.
The phone went skittering across the road and was smashed to pieces.
Fortunately for her, the outcome could have been a lot worse had she wandered out a few seconds later.

I agree with many of the sentiments expressed, but I also think we should hold back from blaming the victims.

It might be a pedestrian's own fault that they get in the way of a moving motor vehicle, or it may not. The point is, if said vehicle is wearing a bull bar, our pedestrian will likely suffer significantly more damage regardless of fault.

Better to argue the necessity of a bar in animal strike conditions than the suburbs. You won't win an argument based on blaming a pedestrian for getting in the way.

You raise a good point michael. And it doesnt take into account that a lot of the pedestrians are kids who just make a mistake due to youth.

I hold my tongue on these threads nowadays as there are very few forums where a dissenting or debating voice against bullbars is welcome.

Far out! Not this whole shemozzle again! I mean..... again! Look. Car with a bullbar travels at 110km/h and hits someone - they get badly injured. Car with no bullbar travels at 110km/h and hits someone - they get badly injured. Spot the difference? Exactly!!!!! There is no difference! To stop cars hitting people you'd need to either take all cars off the road or reduce the speed limit to zero. Fantastic options both. Life cannot be guaranteed, all you can do is be a little smarter about it.

I vote to ban texting while walking!

Lets face it - texting is a distraction that causes cars... hmmm, no! DRIVERS to crash their cars.... maybe it causes pedestrians to crash their bodies!!!
Loud music is a distraction worthy of a fine in some instances too - so lets ban ipods while walking too!!!
