  • 4x4 rage?

As a new 4x4 owner, it seems that some car drivers are acting aggressively toward me - for example when I'm attempting to merge.

In the space of 2 days, I have had 2 separate drivers deliberately and aggressively try to prevent me from merging, even though I was clearly ahead of them and starting the merge.

I have always tried to drive defensively and exhibit grace on the roads (not always successfully I confess) and will continue to do so, but by gum I felt tempted to nudge the bugger who tried to run me off yesterday. He knew he'd done the wrong thing because he then sped off and weaved around the traffic to get away from me. And this was no youngster, either. His hair was thinner and greyer than mine, and I'm age 48.

Does that tally with anyone's experience, or have I just encountered a couple of twits having bad days?

No one wants to get stuck behind a big ole slow 4wd. But I'll tell you, I've surprised some Commodore drivers at the lights.
But I feel for you, it happens all the time. Maybe they think "the bullbar wont hurt", or "he is a 4wd so he cannot be doing the speed limit"...

      Is it ignorance or arrogance??

Driving the Prado is bliss compared to the amount of people who have to get in front of me when driving a Truck, and then proceed to drive well below the speed limt because a 450HP semi couldn't possibly do 100kms / hr. Driving trucks however is bliss in comparison to when i used to ride motorbikes, people would cut me off, and run me off the road almost on a daily basis, even when travelling with the headlight on as i always did.

        Cheers Andrew

I find this happens also, not overly regularly - but it does happen! For the most part I do my best to ignore it, sometimes harder than others...
Quite often finding myself parked behind them at the next light - where I would believe they become solely aware of the bullbar and lights in their rear window!

Ignorance and arrogance! You'll probably find that these same people do the same thing to trucks - that being plain suicide...

EDIT: Andrew you beat me too it - but only just!

You must have been driving in Adelaide.

I have had the luxury of living or working over lengthy periods in all capital cities barring Hobart (only spent a little time there) and this is Adelaide's specialty - aggressiveness. If you indicated people will speed up to stop you from getting in front of them. Not specifically for 4WD's, they do it for all cars.

This is pretty common for me in Adelaide - Showing them ARB accessories works well if they get to pushy -

but be careful doing it in the northern suburbs -

A fella I know had an incident recently in his 200 series. This guy is a little under thirty and has a 200 Sahara and is about to buy a second. He was crusining around (Adelaide) a few weeks back with his dad in the car with hime and had some hassles with another driver. The other driver got out of the car with maybe the tyre arm and started beating the crap out of the panels on the 200 series. The cops were called and arrived and the other diver wanted to take them on as well.

                        Nice place we live in.

Yep, some people do not like the visibility when behind a 4wd. They probably do the same to trucks and buses. I have noticed on a few occasions cars overtaking me to just sit in the traffic in front of me. From what I have seen they tend to be tail gaters, so when up the arse of a 4wd can't see a thing.

                              Re: 4x4 rage?

I drive about 125klms a day to work and back ( Camden - North Sydney NSW ) and find this happens every day, to some extent. Usually it's motorbike and bicycles riders, and small car drivers that have no patience, and will do the anything to get in front or around me. It's not that I drive slow, it's just that everyone else is always in a hurry in peak hours and they don't like to be behind 4wds. I came close to taking out a scooter rider last Friday when she decided to overtake everyone by driving in the on-coming traffic lane to get around us. What she didn't know was that I was the first vehicle off the lights and that I took off faster than she expected. I didn't do it intentionally to block her as I didn't see her! Anyway .... it was a very close thing, it was either going to be me running her over, or her collecting the traffic lights. I slammed on the brakes and she missed the front of me and the traffic lights by millimeters. Scared the bejesus out of me, but I got over it quickly when she gave me the "finger".
They say that "what goes around, comes around". About two set of lights later I came up right behind her a fired-off my triple air horns at about a meter and a half. She was a young Asian lady but now she had the color of a albino! Who knows, if she remembers this it might save her life in the future.
