      Re: one lock or two

With the Independant front suspension of the Prado it will lift a wheel and lose drive well before the solid rear axle in most circumstances.
Therefore front first would make a lot of sense, but since he already has a rear Locker fitted, as has been said already it comes down too what he uses his Prado for.

My thoughts are if you can afford to spend the extra and fit the front locker then do so as you will have it if you ever need it and it won't affect anything in the mean time.
If though its a choice between the front locker and something else, well time to prioritise.

Oh what a feeling .... to lock or not to lock lol

Good in theory, but if you get most of the drive from the front diff, you will break CV's, (this will happen to all 4WD's), also the weight of the vehicle is on the rear, so most of the drive would come from there, the front would be scratching away like an old chook.

            Re: one lock or two

I personally have my 120 twin locked. I came from 15 years of building up my patrol so when i bought the prado, i figured i need to make sure my truck has the best possible chance with the least amount of effort needed. And it makes sense. Having both front and rear locked puts considerably less strain on the vehicle due to not having to use the loud pedal as much and bounce around whilst climbing.

              Re: one lock or two

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that if you have a front locker there is a slightly reduced steering effect. The car will more likely want to drive straight forwards when it is engaged. Moreso than for when the rear is on.
It does turn, but wants to understeer a lot so it's something you need to be prepared for.

Yeah true but it is possible to switch off when approaching a corner hence no problem with turning. Thus the benefits of air lockers

                  Re: one lock or two

One locker or two really depends on what you are trying to achieve. In the Prado the rear diff is suspect so a locker will fix that problem and give extra traction in the tuff stuff, however if traction is what you are after, the front will offer more benifit as the IFS limits articulation at the front. For maximum traction both is best, and i find rather than enabling me to go where others can't (which i can 8) ) the biggest benifit is being able to walk over obstacles slowly and surely rather than gunning it and spinning wheels and bouncing all over the place. As for understeering with the front locker on, I personally don't run my lockers for long periods, just turn them on and off as needed. If you get in the habit of using them all the time you don't really learn how to drive without them, which could cause you grief if they play up in the bush.

In these pics the first 2 are the same spot, anyone without lockers was having to winch out of this one, Third pic my mate followed in an unlocked cruiser but at twice the speed, heaps more air then i had, and huge wheel spin on the front left putting major strain on the CV when he finally touched down. On both occasions it was a relativly gentle ride for me 8)

The front locker was the one most needed in these situations!

                  Cheers Andrew
