  • VMS on 3G ipad

Haven't seen this discussed much yet so thought I'd chime in. Recently go a 3G 64G iPad (reduced!) and downloaded the VMS app. Has all the Gregorys and 1:250000 Itopo maps. Seems like a good package for the $ compared to a VMS or Hema unit, and I get the added bonus of an iPad to use for web surfing on 3G, email etc.

Taking it away this weekend so will see how it performs.

      Re: VMS on 3G ipad

I bought the unit with a Telstra sim card (3Gig prepaid) and everything worked fine from the get go.

After realising 3G wasn't viable for the size of the VMS app (yep, $199) I got on the wireless network at work and downloaded it there. Worked fine once installed.

It's got a drop-down menu of all the maps - including full Oz coverage in Gregory's and iTopo maps. If you scale in on a map it will automatically switch from the gregory's to the more detailed iTopo ones. About 45 Gregorys maps and 8 iTopo ones, including lots of specialised Gregorys ones like "Snowy Mountains Tour". Only gripe is that it only works in portrait rather than landscape orientation, so most car mounts can't be used in GPS mode.

I plan to rig up some sort of mount before our big trip later in the year, but will give it a few test runs first.

      Cheers,

      Cam

            Cam,
How well does it work when out of phone range?
Is it true GPS or does it rely on phone coverage?
            Cheers

I am lead to believe that the ipads and and the new ipone 4 have built in gps so no service required.

                Re: VMS on 3G ipad

Yep, the 3G ipads are true GPS chipped so no need for phone network. It's not the fact that it's 3G that makes it work, they just happened to put a GPS chip in the 3G model. Confused yet?

I'm doing some out-of-range touring in the Vic High Country this weekend, so we'll soon find out eh!

Thanks for the link Rob - that mount looks pretty much ideal.

                      VMS on 3G ipad

I am interested in getting some feedback on how the vms app works on the iPad and how it compares to ozi

At 149 it is not too bad considering it comes with maps

Look forward to any feedback Here
                      Thanks

                          Re: VMS on 3G ipad

If you have already been running OziExplorer and have a collection of Maps then why not conside the applicationed called Bit Map.

Bit MapBy NIXANZ. This is an alternative to OziExplorer but compatible with the OziExplorer format. It dosn't look like it has the complete feature set but it looks to be $4.99 (presumably US as they are the centre of the universe  )

                            Mmm this is interesting..

So I understand I need a iPad. Would a nice refurbished series one iPad from the apple shop be ok ?

What's the minimum size iPad would I need to run maps like the VMS app ?

Also, I gather I need a 3G enabled iPad to run a map app ?

                            Cheers,

Yes u need a iPad, does not matter which one it does not need 3G as it does not need the sim as the iPad has a gps inbuilt, I only have the 16 gb one and believe it is enough
