    Hema vs VMS

    I'm just beginning research into GPS units. My priority is for offroad mapping rather than a great city gps.
    What should I look out for?
    I have used HEMA paper maps for years and because of that I like the sound of the
    HN5i.
    Are handheld units able to have the HEMA maps loaded?
    Are there better options?
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Well I am new to GPS as well and I am using an iPad 2 with an app called bitmap which I have loaded the hema maps onto it. It works well for me but I only use it as a basic map to see where I am so far. I love the iPad for this because it also does so much more like movies and email, the only trouble I am finding is mounting it in the 150 prado.

      I only recently brought the Hema HN5i the city mapping is quite intuitive helps (much better than my tom-tom) I have only so far used the offroad maps on one instance, I'm still learning all the tricks with this bit, I can't fault it, Plus I got it for slightly over 700 so I really can't complain!

        I like to use NatMap maps, they have more detail than the Hema and will also run with OziExplorer, as will the Hema maps . Am running this combination on my current VMS in car unit.
        The natmap maps also work with OziExplorer on my android phone (just did it as a trial), I intend to buy a 10" android unit soon to do this, I believe the OziExplorer guys are working on a iPad version.

          Neither, they are both overpriced. Buy a 7 inch no brand from eBay and build one yourself.

            It is all good to say that but if you have no idea on how to do it it would be easier to buy one that is already set up. I have read the threads about building your own but I just have no idea what they are talking about.

              $700 vs $200 for DIY you can learn a lot for $500

              Easiest way is to have 2 SDCards, one for on-road, one for off-road

                There are quite a few reports of both the Hema and VMS units carking it, and if you go to LCOOL VMS have coped a bit of a hiding over customer support.

                Its not that hard to set up a cheap Ebay unit as suggested by D4D, and if something goes wrong you could probably afford to buy another two or three cheapies and still be ahead. Last I heard, both the VMS and Hema units were both made in China so they all have similar pedigrees.

                I reckon Natmaps are better when travelling remote as well.

                  I use a netbook and blutooth gps receiver for most remote travelling now, but also have a 7" unit like D4D describes.

                  The 7" units are fine for what they are, as long as you get one that runs windows ce OS.
                  That way, you can run oziexplorer and utilise the many maps available that work with that program.
                  The one that I have cost 1/7th of the cost of a VMS unit.

                  I run hema 1:250000 maps, as well as a nice set of 1:25000 NSW that I have. They all work on the e-bay 7" system.
                  My friend has an in dash vms unit. It works very very well, and does have some advantages over the cheaper e-bay units.
                  1. It is faster than mine
                  2. It has a matt finish screen and it is much easier to see the maps on a bright day, or in glairy conditions.
                  3. Use of the pointer to scroll the screen over maps is very smooth and fast.

                        hey davros, your friend with the vms, has he had any problems with the unit, ive been looking at them for a while but have been told about software issues, also curious about fit and finish, does it look stock? the unit looks trick, much better than factory gxl screen.

                          It is installed in an 80 series gxl and looks neat.
                          He hasn't had any issues of reliability with the unit as far as I know.
                          He is also jealous of the functionality of my netbook gps though. The ability to zoom out and get a bigger picture is priceless when you are:

                          1. Out bush and discussing tracks and routes for the day with fellow travellers
                          2. Are getting older, and have eyesight issues
                          3. Can have the maps under the annex or around the campfire at night, to discuss, plan, bull$hit etc.

                            i have picked up cheap netbook and going the same as dav, a good reason also is i can download all photos and vids from camera cards,and the daughter can watch movies on long trips,just got to down load maps.

                              Thanks everyone for the advice.
                              If I was to buy a cheap unit, what do I look for?
                              How do I load the maps onto it?
                              Is Ozi Explorer the platform from which to begin or is it map software?

                              Sorry for the dumb questions, I have to start somewhere!
