Hema vs VMS

1. You look for a unit that uses windows-ce as an operating system, so you can load OziExplorer-ce onto it and use hema maps or similar. Thanks everyone for the advice.
If I was to buy a cheap unit, what do I look for?
How do I load the maps onto it?
Is Ozi Explorer the platform from which to begin or is it map software?
Sorry for the dumb questions, I have to start somewhere!
2. Usually people load extra maps from a sd card, but I have loaded mine on to the unit itself. Look for a unit that supports largeer capacity sd cards.
3. Ozi is quite good but does have a steepish learning curve. I have not used other mapping programs so can't comment there.
You can set up your new unit as a mass storage device, and then plug it in to your pc at home by usb so you can load software, maps etc to it.
Also......Win-ce is a Pr!ck of a program IMO. Another reason I prefer using the netbook, which has a proper OS, and full version of Ozi.
I now use the 7" e-Bay unit for city street nav only, which it does really well.
Others may have better answers for you.

Polaris also do a unit,
In theirs you can have normal street mapping functions and you can option
it with ozi explorer installed. On my version there is a menu selection that
you can select either street mapping or off road maps. It runs windows ce.

If you want to do serious navigation including setting up routes, tracks, waypoints and the like then invest the time and modest $$ in OziExplorer. It is a serious piece of software with many years of development and a large user base. Being able to work on a laptop/desktop then send your plans to the handheld is the way to go. There is a huge map resource base out there, a lot of which is free (legally).
I've used the PDA version on successive handheld units over the years and now the Android phone so the devices needed to carry are reducing nicely.
But think about your needs - are you leading a trip in unknown area and truly want to navigate or do you simply want a display of where you are on a map.

hi,
the haema is a good unit...the only thing i do not like
is that it uses the navtech maps for street navigation which are not
up to date as the whereis maps....
also you can use a 32gig sd card for yor maps....i have loaded all the
nsw 25000k maps to my brother's unit (11 gig)...

i really like the sound of the Hema, but have heard plenty of positive stuff about both. Im sure, like most things, there are some negatives. Building one sounds like agood idea if you have the time and the skills/knowledge...............unlike me.sigpic2" King Springs, Ironman Foam Cell Shocks. 17x9 Dick Cepek wheels with 275/70/17 Maxxis Bighorn 762S.
