  • How do I load Hema maps onto my ipad?

    Hi Guys,
Wifeydarling has bought me an ipad 3g for my birthday and I'm keen to load my Hema DVD map collection onto the unit.... I don't know how. Could someone explain how to do this please. I can't figure it out if it doesn't have a disc player.
    Thanks,
    Bruce the Luddite.

Just guessing but I would say you need to buy the app so the gps portion integrates.

What format are your hema maps in ? They may be in ECW (.ecw) or oziExplorer format (.ozfx2 / .ozfx3 with a matching .map file) , or they may be in MemoryMap format (.qct).

The maps themselves are of no use to you without the appropriate software to use them (the app) on the iPad. If they are in oziExplorer format, you "may" be able to get them to work using an app called BitMap. I tried it and the app was too buggy and/or too fussy on the datums used, and couldn't read encrypted ozfx3 files, etc for me.

If they are in ECW format, you'll need to use the oziexplorer tool "img2ozf" to convert them to oziExplorer format first and then try using BitMap on the Ipad with them. Note: It must be an old version of the img2ozf, as the newer one encyrpts the maps and Bitmap can't read them - Info on the Bitmap website.

If they are in MemoryMap format, you can just load them directly onto your iPad and use the 'MemoryMap' app. It is possible to convert some oziexplorer format maps to MemoryMap format, but it's a complex task.

Note: To copy files over to you're iPad, you first need to install the approariate app (eg: BitMap or MemeryMap) on you're iPad. Then you can connect your iPad to your PC, open itunes, and in the 'apps' tab for your iPad, scroll down to the bottom of the page, select your app and select the files to copy over.

If the above doesn't make sence, sorry, but that's as basic as I can get it.

        John

PS: I use an iPad with MemoryMap myself.

PPS: Another option is just to buy the 'Hema 4WD Australia' app for your iPad. It is basically a copy of MemoryMap and all the Hema Maps in MemoryMap format.

PPPS: If you have the apps in oziexplorer format, it may have been easier to get an Android tablet, and just install the Android version of OziExplorer.

            Hi Guys,
I'm away from home at the moment so cant be too specific. I purchased the maps as a DVD disc (Rasta, topo. and geo.) from a registered seller. They are currently loaded onto my PC.
This is sounding a bit techy for the likes of me.... maybe i would be better to buy the proper Hema app. and download from the net and sell the DVD version on?
What does the download roughly cost?
            Thanks,
            Bruce.

I see both Hema and Mud Map cost $149. Which app do people recommend/use?

I used Hema maps app on our recent trip across the Simpson and up to the Kimberleys. Worked very well.

Note that it is a simple app: it just overlays your position onto the appropriate map. It DOES NOT calculate distances by the nearest road - only in a direct line. (unlike, for instance, Google Maps) - This means unless you are going in a straight line to or from a waypoint, the whole "distance from/to waypoint" process is a bit useless...

AFAIK there are 2 formats you'll get these DVD's in. The most common is in OziExplorer format, and the viewing program supplied with the disc is often a cut down Ozi program. The other is in MemoryMap format, and comes with the MemoryMap PC software.

MemoryMap has an iOS version (what I use), so you can download the free MemoryMap application, and then upload these maps into it as far as I am aware.

If it's the OziExplorer format, then they don't have an iOS version yet, however, you can use others like BitMap, MotionX, etc

Hopefully that helps you a little bit.

I'd recommend the Hema app (which is really the MemoryMap with the full set of Hema maps).
Just make sure you're iPad is connect to a wiFi network at home/work, etc before you download. It's a few gigabytes in size and you don't want to pay for that with your data allowance from your 3G connection <smile>

Bruce, From what you've mentioned, it souynds like your current HEMA maps are in OziExplorer format. You can't use those directly in the MemoryMap app on your iPad.

                        You're choices are;
                        - Spend some more money on software to convert the maps to memory-map format (and spend some time and technical know-how doing it), or........
                        - Spend the $149 and just get the HEMA app (memory-mapp app and hema mpas in memory-map format).

Up to you, but personally I'd just buy the HEMA app.

Thanks John - yeh that's what I think too - just buy the app. and be done with it.
Anyone use an "as new" Hema disc? - going cheap!!
                          Thanks again John.

Well I bought and downloaded the Hema app.through itunes ($149) at 1.6g..... now there's 2 hours of my life I won't get back. All seems to be fine. Any tricks to getting the best out of it? The app. also says I should register with some US mapping company, whats that about?
                            Cheers,
