here is just one comparison between Mud Maps and Hema, its from the main map of australia from both apps and is of the area of South Australia where I live.

Mud Maps below, note Loxton where I live isnt even on the map, easy to read and very uncluttered but lacking in anything of much use past major highways.

Hema below, bit harder to read but heaps more detail including most of the main dirt roads around the area.

I was going to use Cape york as an example but it didn't photgraph too well for comparrisons, but basically Hema's map has similar detail to the one posted, then I can go to their "cape york" map which is even more detailed and finally a topo map if I need to.

Mud maps basically has the main roads to the cape and a couple of towns marked, the next option is the topo map which has even less info and is on a scale that makes it useless for anything other than local navigation.

As I said, Mudmaps is OK but if you had to buy only 1 then I would go Hema for the detail and a bit easier to use.

    Cheers Andrew

Andrew, agree absolutely, the 25k map has got basically no detail, other than a white line got roads or tracks.
I do like being able to use the google satellite view.

Yes google satellite view is great, only downside is you need coverage for that to work.

        Cheers Andrew

Arhhh, no I think it is on device like the maps, not sure but pretty sure.
Will test it out in Fraser in 3 weeks, won't be much service there.

Easy to test, turn off your wifi or 3g connection and try, I can get a really blurry image of Australia with connection turned off but can't zoom in for anything useful. We ahve tried this on the trails before without any success either once we loose reception.

I would have thought Fraser would be likely to have reasonable coverage!

            Cheers Andrew

On my Nexus 7 tablet memory maps screen won't stay on which makes it impossible to use. Like AJ said trialling memory maps around Albany Denmark hema is a bit more cluttered but has better detail.

I find Androzic with hema maps better to use, the only thing I can't get to work is full screen.

Yeah I had done that, did it again last night, it does open some areas with no coverage, so I'm thinking it works?
But even with reception often it doesn't really work, stays blurry, it doesn't appear to be downloading going by the round thing at the top????
Hard to tell if it work without or not because it sort of does wether it's on or not, anyway, another reason not to buy it.
I use MOTION X that's pretty good especially for satellite and hybrid ( satellite with roads marked) its free or close to it.
You definitely need coverage for that one. But you can download a chunk of maps, just not satellite ones.

Fraser has a Telstra tower on the east around eurong, the island is 120 odd Klm's long, it might work for 20k+ or - on the eastern beach. Other than that hill tops, and you pick up most networks on the west side of the island overall its pretty average unless you are at eurong area.

                    Very good for the price.

Again incomplete, but its part of the puzzle!

I got the motion x as well after hearing good things, we havent used it though, seemed all too hard and nothing that other apps couldn't do as well or better. For a couple of bucks you have nothing to loose!

                      Cheers Andrew
