      Hi Guys,
Just opened the mail this morning and low and behold the El-Cheapo GPS antenna and 5m of cable, took 5 days from Hong Kong.
      Install will have to wait.

I went into a place in Adelaide during the week to grab a short short short aerail for the UHF but also asked to have a look at their "cheap" range of GPS. I told them I wanted to be able to load OziExplorer onto it and my preference would be that it support video in to allow a reverse camera to work.

They had two units they could show me in their "Cheap" range:
        • HEMA Navigator which did look really good but didn't, from memory, support video in and it's cheap category about $1000[/*:m:2n1cqaoa]
        • A.V.N.C which did have support for a reversing camera for an additional fee. This unit was $2500 + about $400 installation + $300-350 for the camera. If I did get this I'd save myself the $400 install and DIY[/*:m:2n1cqaoa]

I would hate to see their expensive range

Has anyone looked at trying something like Shonkymaps to see if these are compatible? They are designed for Garmin GPS units but was wondering if these can be converted? I've seen lots of posts about areas being out of date so thought this might be a possibility.

I had a look at Shonkymaps but not sure what file format the maps are. If they are vector files then you cannot use them in OziExplorer. You need the .ecw format to convert to .map files that OziExlporer uses. Probably easier to use the maps refered to in this thread.

Nice but it's only a 3.5 inch screen, you really need 4.3 for the bush. You can buy the eBay GPS for the same price and get a 4.3 inch screen.

Fair call. i've got it Ozi going on the 7" screen but it's a switching between the road Nav to get you there, then to Ozi while you play, then road Nav to get home doesn't appeal (lazy i guess), i think i'll head down this path to get a windscreen mounted one for offroad.

Fitting GPS Antenna to Safari Snorkle

                    Hi All,
I sort of followed Chippy's idea and fitted my el-cheapo $5.00 External Antenna inside the snorkel.
As the unit is of low profile I didn't think it would create any problems with air intake restrictions and noting also that the unit is waterproof.
The unit is inverted with the lower side facing down, under testing it made no difference to reception.
The antenna is located using a small bit of double sided tape, secured using an ABS plastic marine battery tie down lug which is bolted into position using 2ea 3/16" X 1" 316 SS Csk Hd bolts, washers and Nylocs, and a couple of 1/4" SS nuts for spacers between the Tie down and snorkel body.
Painted all fasteners black so they didn't stand out to much, the coax cable is secured internally and externally using lugged cable ties and small SS screws.

The unit works a treat with 9 Sat's the norm.

I edited this post 22/8/08 as I have made up an extension coaxial cable and the cable now runs into the engine bay, changed the connectors to SMA type much better than the MMCX type connector I did this using adapters from Jaycar Electronics.

                    The snorkel with bolts protruding

got my Zazz unit the other day and had demo version of Ozi running on it in about 15mins! Couldn't alter the software to be able to run both Ozi and the supplied Nav software although it seems like it should as it has an INI file identifing what to run for each menu function. No great problem as the supplied 512MB SD card isn't big enough to hold all the maps for Ozi anyway. Manual says it can handle a 2GB card, which I have somewhere so I'll just keep the original card as is and use a seperate one for Ozi.

Supplied turn-by-turn Nav software works pretty good, except this morning where it wanted me to drive down a 'road' that hasn't been a road for many years! Can't seem to be able to set the date and Ozi doesn't show the correct time or date, will needto investigate that.

Unfortunately, last night I saw an advert in our local paper for a similar spec'd device for only $110! Otherwise I'm happy enough with it.

The Route 66 software I got with my no-name 4.3" GPS is crap. Download iGo version 8 (about 400meg) it's much better. PM me if you want the link. I am looking for something with New Zealand maps if anyone has anything.

                          Cheers

I have just bought a 4330i as I didn't like the small screen on the other one. A mate of mine is taking that off my hands. What have you put together blkmav90?
