      Re: Cheap eBay GPS

Here's my effort, $280 inc postage.
It has the latest iGo8 and PolNav installed.. iGo8 being the better of the two. Plus now I've loaded Ozi as well.
It's got plenty of wiz bang features, see the Ebay link for exact specs
I'm not a fan of wireless reversing cameras (interferance) but it works so I can't complain.

      http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-3-bluetooth...d=p3286.c0.m14

A couple of hours mucking around and I had everything working sweet.

Another great idea from Prado Point. Thanks guys.

Nice one Mick. I had been looking at that sucker since it had the 2Gb of Flash + another 2Gb via SD (or upto 4Gb) but then saw then one I'm now looking at that supports SDHC but no camera.

            Thanks,

With a bit of playing around today I've managed to change the fire background to a Prado photo.

              Re: Cheap eBay GPS

I'm keen to splash out on the GPS unit I want but it's to come from a vendor in Hong Kong. Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with overseas vendors with fleabay?

I would feel reasonably comfortable with a purchase here in Australia but the confidence level drops slightly when the purchase is OS.

This is the unit I'm after:
              http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GPS-Sat-Nav-B...QQcmdZViewItem

The vendor has a 97.8% positive feedback score on Fleabay.

The main reason I want this unit is the support for SDHC cards but if I was to get a local unit I would be getting the same unit that Mick purchased recently. Had been looking at that for a while as well.

                Re: Cheap eBay GPS

Put in a bid for the above unit early last week and was successful on $209 + $29 delivery. Hopfully should arrive tomorrow or the next. I'll be investigating a anti glare/screen protector film such as:
                http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pure-Screen-2...1%7C240%3A1318
Another option is this but it's a little bit mucj maybe:
                http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-3-GPS-Sun-S...1%7C240%3A1318

I'm going to relocate mu UHF mic so that I have a spot to sit the new GPS unit. I'll make another bracket the same as this but locate on the opposite side of the center console for the mic:

As for software, I'm going to put OziCE on. How can you go wrong for $40.00. I believe this unit is already unlocked so that should be relatively easy (I hope) but I've also found an interesting article over on GPS Australia about running vector based maps (like Shonkymaps for Garmin) on a cheap fleabay unit:
                http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=5779
The solution that that fella came up with was to use some software called GIS Russa:
                http://www.gisrussa.com/
                . . .
Has anyone tried this out. I couldn't find any info on this forum about peoples experience with Russa and there are only a few posts over on GPS Australia but nothing substantial

One thing I would like to try and work out, assuming I go with the combined iGo (default) + OziCE + Russa, is how to add some sort of additional menu to the unit so that when you select the navigation icon (that would normally load iGo) that it displays a new menu to allow you to select the specifc navigation tool. I've read about GSFinder and I think I could use this as a simple solution but I want to do something a little more professional (this comment is being made without actually seeing GSfinder). Anyone know of any addon menu tools that run under WinCE 5?

You could write something but it would be pointless, I just have 2 shortcuts in the default folder for gsfinder. I press Nav then press the corresponding shortcut easy as.

Yeah, that was bascially the first option but just wanted to know if there are any existing addon menu options. Still looking and will hopefully find something that will work. I don't really want to write something myself. I write enough code at work but nothing for WinCE. Havn't tried any modible code yet but would be relativerly straight forward so this is still a possibility.

                      Re: Cheap eBay GPS

One thing I've found with my unit is that it can only use 2GB SD cards. That won't hold the entire map suite already (inc in built nav stuff) so adding shonkymaps, etc would definetly be out. One way around this is to have a seperate SD card for each program I want to use and just flip them in and out as desired.

                      Nige.

My unit is supposed to support upto 8Gb SDHC cards. I will be able to confirm that shortly (when it arrives) but even with 8Gb there is still a limitation on the number of maps and systems so my grand design may not come together.

                          Re: Cheap eBay GPS

My unit arrived mid last week with iGo ready to rock and roll. Quick pickup on the Sats straight out of the box. I had read somewhere that this can take upto 10-15 minutes first run but picked them up in about 30 seconds or so.

Played around briefly with Ozi and had this running in Demo mode so quick reg and she's all good.

Havn't lashed out on an 8Gb SDHC card as yet but I did mossy in to the local Tandy's Sunday afternoon. They didn't have any in stock but that was a good thing as they wanted to slug me $55 for the 8Gb where as MSY have them for about $28. I know where I'll get mine.

Currently trying to work out how to run both iGo and Ozi off the same card without too much mucking around. They are currently running on separate cards and each time you change over you need to relink the nav app. One easy work around for this, if I want to manage two cards would be to use an app like RTNavi as the navigation file that then executes the actual app on each disk.

With running multiple GPS apps I've tried to use the system kspec ran on his Polaris but I keep getting an error message "Inffile Can not Open". Tried just about everything I can think of to get around it. But today at work I stumble upon an application on a Chinese site called mobilenavigator. This is short term only until I can get something better but at least it works. Here are some photos:

Leaves the menu system running in background so you have to close this off later. I tried mucking around with this in a resource hacker but it killed the app each time.

I'm pretty happy with the unit. Can't complain about the features that it has in comparison to a brand name unit with the same or similar features.

The blurb on eBay indicates that the unit supports a port for an external antenna. This is incorrect and I've let the vendor know. He is currently looking, apparently, into other options for external antennas via either USB or Bluetooth. I don't really care too much as yet as it works fine. The only other issue I've had is the clock was jumping around a bit. I would set the time to say 7:30 but shortly after it would have lost 30 minutes. I think this was something to do with the time zone settings not storing correctly as it is keeping time now. Will probably buy another one of these for my parents for Christmas.

I had this issue too. Can't remember exactly how I fixed it now  . I think the Igo software conflicts with the Windows clock.

From memory try: In Igo settings, uncheck the " auto time zone" and "Auto time update from GPS" options.

                              Schaffer,

I've written a menu program to run on my Polaris unit. I've put an ini file in to allow configurable paths and 2,3 or 4 button view. This one is written for wince 4.2 and the screen resolution on the Polaris. It's quite easy to write and would be easier on wince 5. It might work on your unit

Download it here. At some stage I will make it more confgurable for screen res etc.

I have just received my latest eBay GPS. The wife wanted a GPS for her car so I gave her the 4.3 inch and bought a 5.0 inch for the Prado. I have to say it's the best $100 I've spent. The new GPS is smaller/thinner and quicker than the old one and the screen resolution is better. Only issue was I recieved a blank SD card. I copied over the software/maps from my old GPS and away it went. Very happy.

                                This is what I purchased http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-5-0-Portable ... 0459370415
