  • Best choice of GPS for off road

looking into getting a GPS system purely for off road. I have an in car system using the whereis maps which is decent (dont know how I managed without it)
I dont think I can use my in car system at all, cant find any info on the website about off road maps, its a Pioneer AVIC HD3.

I was thinking of picking up a handheld from Ebay, maybe a Garmin GPS 60, they are around 250 bucks (if your'e lucky)

Would this be practical? Could my co-driver (mrs Pomp) navigate or do you really need a dash mountable system?

    Thoughts anyone

    Pomp,

many people use the handheld style GPS and they work well in the car usually, and if you have problems, you can mount an external antenna. Most of them have a optional extra cradle that can be mounted on the dash/windscreen.

I have a Magellan handheld because I need to take it with me to places I don't have my Prado  (like on a boat, or oversseas). My car is too old for the in-dash jobby, but I'd go handheld over in-car anyway - for my purposes.

However, security is an issue. I just don't leave it in the car when I'm not with it!

Magellan or Garmin - much of muchness. Search and ye shall discover....
(dare I suggest it, but there are gps-specific forums that are better than pradopoint for researching gps - off to wash my mouth out now....)

I use a Garmin 278 (similar to the 276C) which is very versatile. At least here in Europe this is one of the best devices you can get.

You can plan your trips on the PC (MapSource, Fugawi, TTQV...) and easily upload it to the GPS.

It's installed just below the radio with a selfmade console. The console is fixed in the ashtray opening, I only drilled a single hole, which will be invisible if the GPS is removed.

The device is connected to an external antenna (under the dashboard) and has it's 12V Power supply. It's removable in case you need it outside of the car.

On the pictures it all looks a bit tight, but you can easily reach the buttons on the dash and there's enough room for the shifter.

          Regards Wolfgang

Yes, but I reckon come July 11 (firmware upgrade) it'll be the best thing since sliced bread. I hope so - I have a 1500

Yeah I think it may well be. The thing is the product should have been right in the first place. The second firmware they release is till not right. This is the third one.

I mean why are we paying almost a $1000 to be an alpha tester? The unit is so bad that I don't even call that a beta test.

Now if I choose again, Bye bye magellan. I don't see one feature that I use is not avaliable on garmin but magellan.

Save yourself grief, Magellan had promised the world and they deliver dud. If you are patient, then wait for next firmware.

BTW they said the samething when they release the second firmware.

Totally disappointed, as I had a XL, it is a bit slow but at least it works without crashing......

Sorry for the rant...I had to let it out.
                  Thanks

triton is what happens when marketing and bean counters get involved with a product

To bad they deleted the X00 series before they got their new product right !!

Use a Trimble, the others are just mickey mouse toys

I have recently bought a Navman S80, run the hack files and loaded Ozi CE.
Should provide the best of both worlds at half the price of the HEMA Navigator. Seems to work OK so far, big test coming next week when we head for the desert.

I have a Fujitsu PDA (from the UK) that has a SiRF Star III GPS unit. I run the OziCE software and find it great, though the screen is a little small (3.5"). Best feature is that you can add your own maps, most of which can be downloaded. I would certainly look at getting something that was able to run OziCE again, just with a larger screen.

                            Cheers,
                            Ray.
