I've been looking at those, on Ebay they are going for around $550.

Anyone rate the Magellan Triton series, I was looking at the Triton 500 as it takes an SD card so it can hold more maps and is available for about $350.
I read on another forum that the 'Discover Aus' maps that run on the Magellans are the best as they show all the 4WD tracks. Anyone care to comment on that?

The discoveraus comes on it's own SD card. You cannot move it to another SD card due to copy protection. As for the map it self, it does cover all or almost all 4wd tracks, however, most of the a unamed.

Want to know more of triton series, head over to http://www.tritonforum.com/forum
        Thanks

I reckon a Garmin hand held GPS MAP 76 CSX or Map 60 CSX are good. I have used a 76 CSX at work a fair bit and have found it to be excellent.

How do you find the screen size? It seems a bit small to me compared to the Tritons.
Can you see the screen to navigate while driving?

              GDay Pomp,

I don't use the garmin map 76csx gps for navigating while driving that much - though the few times I have done so it has been ok but no voice instructions. The colour screen is pretty good.

I Mainly use it for field work on foot or in a polaris. Then hook it up to a computer to download/upload track and waypoint data into a GIS program.

Reading the GPS threads is as grey as reading about tyres to the novice. I have spent hours reading about GPS on PP and definitely not any wiser. You guys are so clever but some of us struggle to keep up sometimes. My situ is I have a Tom Tom that I now know is useless in the bush so now I have a laptop and a cd of Hema maps.

For the uneducated how can I get a moving icon onto my laptop screen that shows me where I am and where I can navigate to? And how do I store that track so that I can go back there?

I have hundreds more questions but these will do for a start.

                  offroad gps

                  Hi Laurie

question, what gps unit do you have hooked to the laptop?
with out a valid signal from the gps unit you will not be able to get the moving icon/map feature except in simulation mode.

as to what I run, currently have a Navman f20 for around town/highway driving and a Garmin Etrex camo handheld for bush work.

If i can get a track or route file of an area, I load that in to OZi and upload it to the handheld. will run with this until the funds manager decides I can have some more play money.

                    Hi Laurie
If you want to watch yourself drive around on topigraphical maps of your choice on a notebook screen simply buy a usb gps (approx $70) and OZI Explorer (www.oziexplorer.com) and add maps (you can scan your favorite ones yourself, buy your favorite ones ready to go into OZI Explorer, download free ones etc) it will save track routes etc. Nice and easy and works well

                        Hi Laurie.

I have just received my USB gps from fleabay and have set it up on my laptop running Oziexplorer. I downloaded the topographical maps from this thread
http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....r=asc&start=30 and it seems to work well so far although I am still trying to figure out all the little tricks to get OZI working correctly.

Does anyone know if there is a thread where learners like myself can get tips for OZI explorer from other users. I have tried a search but could not find anything.

                        Cheers

No real drama's JamesC. Could not get the GPS to communicate to the laptop at first and when it did it was intermittent. Evenyually figured out I have a faulty USB port on the laptop. Yesterday it was tested all day and worked perfectly.

Make sure you download some of the utility patches and add on's from the ozi site as well. I recommend Map Merge utility, gps port checker and the mgrs dll (military grid reference system).
The map request utility is also an interesting little program to have a play with.
