with Oziexplorer, does the program have to be a purchased one from the site or will a copy work?
It will work as a demo. To operate properly, it needs a license code that you buy from the Ozi site. It's not expensive IMO.

Do hema map copies work with Ozi or will I have to purchase theses as well?
Hema maps will work with Ozi. I haven't seen any copy protection on them. If you have bought them for Ozi PC, they will work on the mobile version.

Re: Sub $200 4.3" GPS Navigator (from Big W)

Got one of the Binatone GPS's for fathers day with a free upgrade to 2009 maps.
Went through the process of registering and downloading the upgrade but when tried to load maps it popped up with a message saying ineligible for upgrade. It appears that the upgrade checks if the GPS has been used prior to july 2009 ( bought it in September) . Contacted Binatone in England (where their support is) and had to send reciept to prove bought after July.
I went in to BigW to try to swap it out for a new one ( suspect mine was bought back by someone) but all stock has been recalled for some software issue. There may be a issue with the first use date that the GPS records.
In saying this used it last week with 2008 maps and its brilliant.
Now waiting for binatone support to send new link to upgrade then will copy over software and load Oziexplorer.

I have read through this and it seem pretty straight forward, The I did a search on another 4wd forum and came up with the below. I searched the web and found out OziExplorer is $179.00.I have read that ozi was $40 online but cannot find it that cheap as yet. So it would be around $400 to build it. Still not to bad a price I suppose

(Quote: I can see how these things save some money but it doesn't seem to be as much as everyone
is claiming. The device might be $150 if you're lucky and may or may not have good aussie street nav.
You realistically need Oziexplorer PC and CE versions which are about $170 all up, then
if you want the same mapping as the Hema Navigator you'll pay $179 for that. So all up
you're looking at about $500 to get the same as the Hema (and you may not get decent
street nav included). Obviously it is still cheaper, but I have seen 2nd hand hema units
for a lot less than the $950 they sell new for.

I'm still leaning towards a diy version, but probably with a navman gps to be sure of
getting good street nav. It's not as cut-and-dried as it seems though. (Unless perhaps
you are not buying Ozi PC version, or any (expensive) maps - in which case you aren't
        simulating a hema)

OziExplorere CE (the WinCE version and NOT the PC version) is only $40 for the licence hence much cheaper than a VMS or HEMA system and also performs better than those other units. A few people I know have had the hema units and have been nothing but dissapointed. only work intermitently and just too overpriced.

There are a lot of free maps available which you can use with OziCE which will get you up and running. The Hema map set can be purchased for about $170 but a cheaper option, and better maps in my opinion, are the westprint maps. You can selectively buy these for about $5.00 or $10.00 each.

              MickL

Thanks for bringing attention to this GPS.
Got the upgrade from Binatone for 2009 maps and after installing did as you said and cut mobilenavigator files to SD card. works well on SD card.
Problem i have is getting Oziex ce to run. I suspect that as I have a old copy 1.12 it may not be compatible.
What copy of the demo versions should I download to suit the Binatone. I can then determine if its the software or something else.

Thanks for your ideas up to now.

From my memory (Which is often bad  so you may need try both) it's the "MIPS" version you need.

                Mick

Edit: It's the wince_core_runtime_arm you want for this unit.

It was the wince_core_runtime_arm version that got it running.
Works well on demo version so will now register it. My maps are 1:250000 so lack detail.

                    What maps will work best?
Depends what you want them for. For highway cruising I find 1:250,000k is best. Smaller scale such as 1:100,000 or 1:50,000K willl flash buy fast at 100 kph.

For detailed bush bashing you will need more detail, but it depends on where you are as to what is available at what accuracy.

Many areas 1:100,000 K are available, and in more settled areas 1:50,000K or even 1:25,000K may be available. Many of these will be very out of date but will still show the topography (Hills dont move often). Places such as map shops in your capital city will steer you on what might be available to purchase for you state.

Members here might also be willing to "Share" if they and you are not worried about copyright.

There are then sources such as using google earth or other satelite derived data and using programs such as SASGIS to produce your own maps at what ever detail you want.

Finally got the oziexplorerCE instructions on a couple of A4 pages. Quite disappointed to be honest, $40 for a bit of paper. I thought id be getting a CD at the least. The instructions are VERY vauge and you have to be a full on pencil head to work it out (not suited for simple tradies thats for sure). In fact ive been forced to ring a friend in Sydney to give me a help, but even he couldnt help and I consider him a GPS wizard. Anyhow I wrote ozi guys a "Please Explain" for ripping me off over what they sent me and that the instructions and online help are a complete waste of my personal time that I will never get back. So if there are any cluey folks out there that happen to have instructions for dumb computer folk like myself your help would be appreciated.

I don't think I even got that, just a unlock code emailed to me. There is a decent manual on their site. I've read bits of it but I just use the thing as a trip/track logger mostly so haven't had the need to learn too much.

The more you use OziCE the better it gets. I've customised the interface to suit the way I want it to work and played with using routes, multiple odometres and other things and it's really really good. In fact I use it more than I use iGo

The problems is the mips program, I dont know how to navigate it. Let alone type in the code they gave me. Ive spent several hours infront of the computer yesterday and I was ready again to chuck it out the window. Anyhow I got a email back from Ozi and they sent instructions but ive found them of no use, they keep going on about it in computer jargon. They might as well write it in Russian or something, at least I could attempt to tranlate it. Anyhow they need to write it simple step by step, so non pencil head boof heads like me can understand it. Id have to admit im not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers. Ive only owned one for a few years now, ive never had to need one before. A PC on a construction site would look a little odd, certainly not part of my tool kit. In fact the job ive got now is the first one ive had to use a computer since ive been working for over 20 years, so you might now understand where im coming from. Ive more or less had to teach myself and lost half of my hair in the process. Ive already destroyed a few mouses and one screen in frustration. Gees I hate computers, the most useless piece of crap man ever invented, (quote that one). Thats if they dont work properly of course.
