Anybody use an external antenna for their GPS?

Mine (Garmin Map 60Cx) does not seem to have any problem picking up satelites from its postion on the dash. I use a RAM mount and suction cup. I have noticed that when it gets really hot (Gibb River Road) the GPS shuts down and we had to cool down the batteries with the a/c before it work again.

Thinking i might mount it out of the sun and run a different antenna so it still recieves ok.

I use a Garmin 76 with an external antenna mounted on top of the snorkel. The GPS is mounted on the centre console and connected to my laptop (Ozieplorer). The Antenna lead is run down the gap between the snorkel and the A pillar and down thru the firewall in front of the driver.

I have a Garmin Geko that doesnt have an antenna socket, so I use a reradiating antenna. The difference with and without the antenna is quite noticible.

The reradiating antenna looks the same as others and is mounted on my snorkel head. The other end splits to a 12V lighter plug and the reradiating ariel wich I tuck in behind the gps mount. Works great.

i've had a navman icn510 stuck on my windscreen in the sun 24/7 for the last 2 years... hasn't missed a beat!

but it does drop the signal in and out every now and then when under very thick trees (as in can't see the sky through them).

edit: i have considered adding an external antenna, but no sure where to mount the "bit" nice idea with the snorkle but don't have one of them.... yet......

I have a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx, the reception is ok on the dash mount. I use an small mouse-type external antennae, stuck on top of the snorkel with double sided tape, reception is improved at lot.

I got Navman and had gps loose signal every now and then in high country
and in the CBD between tall buildings. Got this gps antenna from ebay
http://www.bc4x4.com/quick/2005/gilsson-ant/ mounted on the snorkel and never had a problem since...

There are a suction cup mount you can get to attach antenna to the windscreen, rooftop/roof rack, etc... The antenna got magnetic base so can be mounted anywhere on the roof as well...

This should help with decisions for anybody contemplating an external aerial. Screenshots taken in my driveway, clear sky overhead with thick tree cover all around. The external aerial is a mouse type from Johnny Appleseed's, mounted on the snorkel. The GPS is mounted on the dash. Yes now you all know where I live (exactly!)

                hey Yota...
I have the Magellan explorist XL.
It also doesn't have an external aerial provision.

                How much? and where from?.
It too suffers from (thick) tree cover.

I got it up here in Newcastle, but I think it is a magellan product so you should be able to get one from most places, ask around. I think it was around the $140 -$150 mark but worth it.

They work great, improves signal atleast double.

I have a blue tooth GPS receiver that feeds data to my PDA. It's signal performance is acceptable but it gets a bit confused in the city though.

Has anyone tried mounting one of these on top of the snorkel in a weather tight container? I reckon that just might work.

                      G'day Drew,

These units are waterproof and suitable for mounting on a snorkel without any type of enclosure being added:

I also looked at mounting the antenna on the snorkel, but decided that I may want to (and have) spin the snorkel head around rearward and not worry about the coax.

So, I went a little more permanent and folded up a stainless steel bracket that bolts to the roof rack anchor points above the front passengers head, drilled a hole and wallah (plus a grommet and some silicon).

It is low profile, and out of the way (until I decide to put roof racks on).

And on a slight tangent... I also folded up a bracket that I screwed inside the passenger’s seatbelt warning light hole to hold my Garmin.

Don't we all, now that we've had a stupid amount of rain I can't use the "Water tanks are low, can't waste it" excuse.

Nice install, Paul - well done.

My father-in-law is a surveyor and threatened to disinherit my wife and I if we bought a GPSr without the ability to have an external antenna. It did mean that a lot of the cheaper units where out of the equation, but I am so glad he made us buy the antenna.

I bought a 60Cx, also, and have the RAM mount suctioned to the windscreen and the Gilsson antenna magnet mounted to the roof.

While I have had only one trip "off the beaten track" with the setup, I found the antenna stayed put and I kept GPS reception where the majority of our party lost it or had intermittant coverage.

Spend the $55 and invest in a Gilsson antenna.

One thing I'm really interested in ..... and some pics would be a great help .....

For those who have fitted an external GPS antenna to the top of the snorkel .........

How have you run the cable up there .... preferrably without drilling any extra holes in the car ??????
