  • For those of you that have had the "antenna on ARB bar" epileptic seizure syndrome and breaking periodically, this seems to fix the issue.
Heatshrink over the spring provides a good amount of extra stiffening and dampening of the spring.
    Seems to work a treat

    • Nice 1CB, expect an hour of corrugations will bring it back to life though, they just like to boogy on an ARB bar

      • So you covered the not so stiff bit with a not quite latex coating for additional protection then?

Its just heavy heatshrink tubing, the antenna just go ballistic and break because the ARB bar bounces around so much.
The heatshrink seem to dampen the spring enough so the antenna doesnt go into the death wobbles

          • Great idea Marc. I was at ARB earlier in the week adding to my wish list and I was looking at replacing mine with a heavier duty spring (they had 3 different sizes available) as I lost my aerial on the way out of Carnarvon Gorge. This looks like a much cheaper alternative... When you say heavy duty heatshrink, I wasn't aware there were different thicknesses. Where to did purchase it from please?

            • Hi Craig
I cant really say if its actual heavy duty, it just feels quite thick and heavy duty.
Initially I wrapped the spring in duct tape to test out the idea, that seemed to take most of the vibes out but after a few weeks it was "slipping" as stretchy tape does.
You can see the tape in previous pics,
              http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post308240.
I put the heatshrink over the top of the tape.
              Seems to be the answer.

The heatshrink I got, from a local supplier called Larrikin Products, but you can probably buy it anywhere like Jaycar.

              http://www.larpro.com.au/larpro/product/3967

Its Sumitomo Sumitube, its 60mm flatened, 38mm diameter, just big enough for the largest part of the spring and shrinks enough for the smallest bit.
              Cheers
              Marc

                • I was originally thinking of replacing the spring too but the price of a spring is ridiculous and the dismantling of the antenna is a pain.
This is much cheaper and easy.
Thinking about it though, if I was doing it again, I would still tape it first.
I needs the extra vibe deadening.

                    • Didn't get to a Jaycar last week and then yesterday I saw some when I was checking out the big new Masters hardware at Springfield but couldn't remember the diameter so I will get some from Jaycar tomorrow.
