My rope did have a thimble but I was worried that it was putting strain on the rope and would probably have cut through it under load so I removed it. Mine is now like the shot 1CB posted where the loop in the rope is directly around the centre pin of the hook.

The rope supplier actually stated that the thimbles are not rated at anywhere near the rating of the synthetic rope and therefore in extreme cases they collapse, create an edge when they fold and will cut the rope.
Due to the inherent nature of the rope, it provided no support to the thimble as wire rope does by maintaining its round form.
This is from the trials he has been conducting with the army and the conclusion was unanimous in that you are better off without the thimble.
It is totally uneccessary for rope and in some cases detrimental and possibly dangerous.
Anyway, mine came without one so you do whatever you wantMarc, 2003 Grande V6, Just a Bit of Stuff Done..........Work in progress.

The problem with this is that squeezing it in the vertical plane made it open out in the perpendicular plane - this caused severe strain on the rope as it exited the thimble. I felt that putting strain on the rope (i.e. actually using it for its intended purpose) would have probably caused damage to the rope where it went over the ends of the thimble. Added to this, Marc was in contact with a rope supplier who said that you shouldn't use a thimble as they put undue strain on the rope anyway. Taking these two together I decided to simply remove the thimble.
BTW you guys convinced me by baffling me with b7llshit!Bitumen: A blatant waste of taxpayers money!

Seriously though, lots of people have rope with a thimble and just as many without.
Only the more extreme situations that would be of concern.
If it comes out easily great, if not, dont worry about it
Aparently these "tube thimbles" are the only rated and correct ones for rope, so they say!!
