  • Finally got around to spraying a can of JLM intake cleaner through the prado this arvo. I put half the can through the intake before the turbo and then pulled the intercooler off and sprayed some straight down the butterfly/ into the elbow. While spraying short bursts before the turbo I noticed the engine rev out each time. When I sprayed it directly into the butterfly then reconnected the intercooler and started the engine it was hesitant to turn over but when it did there was noticeable smoke from the exhaust. The smoke cleared in seconds and everything went back to normal.

    I did take it for a spin and have to say there is a slight difference in the throttle response. More so evident when taking off from a standing start, but there is improvement. I did not expect a drastic change as my intake was fairly clear before the cleaning spray application. I will add it to the servicing regime as I believe it will have more of an effect over a longer sustained application.Once It was run around the block a few times I cooled the engine and dropped the oil and ran some diesel conditioner through the fuel tank.

    Other than that ive upgraded the bolts that fasten the bash plate and have re rigged the solor pannel power feed and plug to handle the elements its exposed to on the roof.

    Cheers,

    • Found a recent pic on the phone today. Thinking about selling the alloys and fitting the King steelies all round in black. Wil also see some repairs from the latest trip. Had the rear wheel number plate bracket snap due to the harsh corrugations up on the cape road and replacement of the front wheel arch plastics are also on the agenda.

          • Upgraded the rear number plate bracket and installed the reverse camera. Set it up so that it turns on automatically when selecting reverse.

            • After a period of the Prado sitting dormant in the shed after my last trip I neglected to attach my battery charger to my aux battery. Subsequently ive killed it beyond recharging repair! Anyhow out it came and has been replaced with a SuperCharge All Rounder 105ah. An expensive lesson in vigilance.

              After sifting through countless threads, reviews and emails to suppliers ive finally ordered a Steinbauer chip. Mr 4x4's recent advise on the matter tipped me over as im planning to start towing a bit more when taking friends and family away so need the extra trailer for prolonged stays. She already sports a 3" so by all accounts the chip should replace a bit of low down zest when fully loaded and towing a boat. Will see how it goes in 2 weeks when I can get home and fit it up.

              Cheers,

              • Well finally got home this afternoon and found the Steinbauer module sitting in the mail pile! Have fitted it this afternoon which took about 40min once I got it dummy fitted and then totally put in as permanent. Took her down to the servo for a full tank of fresh diesel and did a few test drives around town and down to the port and back. Have definitely noticed the difference, most obvious from a standing start. Its not a kick in the pants type of power increase, more like a smoother application with more responsiveness. Ive found third gear has its oomph back again as a go to gear when power is needed to overtake in general traffic. Im leaving the box set as it came for now until I get the EGT and boost gauge installed hopefully next week. Im heading out to Tunnel Creek for the weekend so I will be able to compare it more in depth once she is fully loaded up again and carrying 3 passengers.

                Cheers,

                  • Ok so had to repair a busted seal on the front of the transfer case. For others in the same predicament just make sure you let the parts department know your exact build date. Builds past 07/08 had a change in seal design. My build is 05/08 so this is the seal part number and a new locking nut;

                    • Finally got around to installing a twin pillar pod and a boost + EGT gauges. Went with a brand called Race Tech. They are a smoked lense and an option of white and amber LED back lighting. I went with the white light and am happy with its display. I tapped into the fuse box underneath the steering wheel and hooked into the ignition and cigarette lighter fuses for power and display colour activation. The boost gauge at full throttle, Steinbauer on factory setting and snorkel reads a max of 18psi. The needle barely shakes at idle so all in all another nice addition. My EGT sensor is currently zip tied in the engine bay until I can tap into the dump pipe hopefully sometime this week. One thing though with the smoked lens option is that is can reflect when the window is down. No biggy as once you remember where the needles should sit it will be like the other instruments as a quick reference look. Other than that you can setup max boost and EGT levels so it can give you an audible warning and blue LED if the engine exceeds your settings.

                      • After much thought and the fact I already had a spare with the same rim Ive decided to take the alloys off and bolt on some King 17" steel rims in black. Photos don't really do it justice but im very happy with the outcome. Have always been a fan of the white on black and I dare say it will be easier to 'clean' with this colour rim as opposed to the Toyota alloys. Ill have 4 rims for sale as of now and another in about 4 weeks once I get back home again and have my secondary spare swapped over too.

                            • Back in town and picked up the latest from the post box! Sprint Booster Throttle Control. Was a skeptic even during ordering but fitted it this arvo and can vouch it does exactly what is advertises. The throttle comes on allot quicker even in the green medium setting. I have no need to go to the red maximum. Im actually going to dial the Steinbauer back to the out of the box settings and I think Ill be on good thing. Very impressed with the combo thus far. Will be great for towing and the best thing is both the chip and throttle controller can be switched off if need be/ not towing or needing the extra horses when not loaded up. Real easy to hook up as its just plug and play to piggy back in between the throttle and OEM plug.

                              • Just drilled and threaded my EGT sensor into the dump pipe of my 3" exhaust. Reading a touch under 400*C cruising at 100km 5th gear, 33*intake temp. Under full load I got her up to 600*C but that's not a driving style id ever need to adopt with the foot buried in 3rd gear for long periods of time.

                                If your going to do this without removing the dump pipe I suggest getting a right andgle drill extension, hammer punch the hole location to seat the drill bit, drill as straight as you can so the thread bit can do its job properly. Once the thread bit has grabbed, turn in three times and then one turn out to clean the shaving ot of the bit and new cut thread line. Be paitent or youcan strip the thread or thread it onthe wrong angle.

                                Cheers,
