  • Wozclean's 2003 Manual GXL 120

We purchased our 2003 Burgundy GRJ120 GXL in Sept 2008 with approx 220,000km on the clock. It wasn't until being referred to this site by Team Ladybug that we really got hooked including signing up for the 2012 GTG thus some mods have definitely been required. Naturally the wish list of mods keeps growing just like everyone else's on here.

    Came with:
    • Sovereign Bullbar
    • Mickey Thompson Tyres (since removed)
    • HTB Tow Bar (similar to Hayman Reese)
    • Colour Coded Hard Spare Wheel Cover (but it's grey)

We installed prior to becoming PP members:
    • Dual Fuel (Vapour Injected LPG)
    • Driving Lights
    • Fog Lights (the yellow kind)
    • Roof Racks
    • Weather Shields
    • Upgraded Stereo (out of a later model Prado/Corolla/Rav4)
    • Kumho AT Tyres
    • Tinted Windows
    • Garmin GPS

Since becoming PP members the following mods (with the first few to meet the SA 2012 GTG Minimum Vehicle Requirements) have been done:
    • Uniden UHF (UH7760NB) Radio
    • Recovery Points & Hooks front & rear
    • ARB 9,000lbs snatch strap
    • Bridle/equalizer strap

    Fog Lights (Yellow Kind)

Having joined PP and now finally planning to do some serious 4WDing, it was clear the fog lights had to be relocated as they were simply too low (in fact we’d known this for some time but now it was essential).

    There were two problems
    1. I don’t like drilling holes/cutting things unless absolutely unavoidable
    2. SWMBO wanted them to look “aesthetically pleasing”

So two brackets were made to mount them onto. They were made so that they would provide plenty of support and wouldn’t wobble too much while driving.

Holes unfortunately had to be drilled into the bumper but they are discreet.

Rubber was used to prevent rubbing on the bullbar and assist with absorbing vibrations while driving.

Bit of paint to make the brackets blend in with the bullbar.

I suggested hanging them from the brackets but SWMBO felt the brackets would be noticeable so a mate suggested the foggies to sit on top of the brackets.

SWMBO is happy with the final result so all is good.

      Uniden UH7760NB UHF Radio

One of the Minimum Vehicle Requirements is a UHF Radio so we started shopping around.

SWMBO was a little concerned after a comment made by a 4WD accessories retailer regarding warranty to buy online so I rang and confirmed warranty with Uniden themselves. (I recommend if anyone ever has any questions regarding warranties to ring the manufacturer themselves and ask.)

As much as we really like to shop local, SWMBO wanted a remote mic and therefore we also had to consider $$$$. So we purchased ours from gadgetcity on evilBay.

Price included a Uniden AT870 Aerial and postage.

Where to mount the Radio considering my rules on holes and cutting?

We were advised that the UHF could be mounted under the centre console but discovered that this would not be as easy as first implied. SWMBO did not want it anywhere else, however, I convinced her to have it concealed between the console insert and cup holders.

SWMBO was happy with this as long as I used flat headed screws from inside the console to mount the UHF through the holes I initially thought I would have to drill.

As it turned out no holes needed to be drilled. I used double sided tape and trust me I tested it first. The first test involved shaking the living s*#! out of the console but oops the UHF fell off. I realised that this amount of shaking was only going to occur (heaven forbid) in a roll over and then it wouldn’t matter anyway. So I primed the console and reattached the UHF. This time, once enough setting time had passed, I lifted the console by the UHF and yep all good!

        Uniden UH7760NB UHF Radio

All that was left was to reinstall console and run the wiring for the remote mic and to the aerial.
(the wires are the red & black ones running up along the left and across top)

The aerial was naturally mounted on the tab on the bullbar, but I did have to drill the hole bigger and thankfully the bullbar was aluminium and I had a reamer (albeit for wood) so I used that.

Wires were run from the bullbar to under the bonnet ensuring that all wires were neat, tidy and discreet.

Remote speaker mic has also been attached using double sided tape to just under the hazard button so as the driver doesn’t have to over-reach.

          Uniden UH7760NB UHF Radio

You know those holes I thought I would have to drill, well they had to occur and are very discreet so SWMBO happy because the double sided tape just didn’t work after a while. Oh well, all is good in the end and we actually went to the Bendleby Recce in June with a functioning UHF Radio.

            Recovery Points & Hooks

After reading so many posts here about recovery points and hooks for Prado’s, we decided to go with the recommendations and tried & tested plates of a fellow PPer, AJ120. So thanks goes to AJ120 for a great deal.

Once the plates were installed, the front recovery hooks (that are rated) were as easy as pie to install.

To be able to have a recovery hook (that is rated) installed on the driver’s side rear, I had to have a plate made up. Otherwise the rear recovery hooks were easier than the front to fit - just make sure the exhaust ain't hot when you install the driver's side.

I did have to source 4x longer bolts with the right thread for the passenger side hook and driver’s side plate.

To go with all this an 8,000kg ARB recovery strap and 8.5 tonne bridle/equalizer strap have been purchased.

The winch is now on the wish list.

Nice work guys - the hooks are the cleanest part under the rig by the looks of it!

Hope you get the chance to use them on the GTG.
                Cheers
                Micheal.

Thanks Matty & Loz, We are trying to get a bit more done before the gtg but some one invented that stupid idea of passing time and called it work. So with time rapidly running out the only things likely to be done before the gtg will be the drawers and fridge slide, for which I have all the materials for and are well under way, haven't even had time to post all the mods that are already done to the rig.

Will have to catch up with you at the gtg,

                    Cheers, Matt & Caite.

Thanks Micheal, the plan is to get to use all this stuff we've spent a small fortune on buying, I pose the question "what do we do after the gtg?" might have to start a new thread about that lol. So many SA PPers, might have to organise another SA GTG for after the GTG.

And yes the hooks are the cleanest part of the rig because I haven't had time to clean it and buff the scratchs out, just so I can tell the Hugs & Kisses off for putting new scratches in the duco, should be good for a laugh although i'll get thumped anyway

                      Cheers, Matt & Caite

Sounds like you guys need to get stuck into getting ready instead of cooking pizzas for visitors. Really it was great to catch up with you all and sit down on something that was not moving. Looking forward to seeing you again at the GTG.
