I believe it is basically due to a lack of air flow.
I know on other threads the issue has also been identified i.e. the ineffective intake vents built into at the front of the 90 series bonnet particularly at slower speeds become more in effective when you put things like bars and lights in front of them, consequently the engine runs hotter and the weak point is apparently under the valve seats.
I have a factory alloy bar, lights and was towing a camper at slow speeds in fairly warm conditions, perfect recipe for cracking the head.
Hence my reason for adding the bonnet scoop

It would certainly help, but I'm not sure that it is really necessary. A much cheaper solution is to service your viscous fan - add a bit more silicone oil (can be had from Toyota or a hobby shop), and it will always be on when the motor is running. If you have an auto, you could also add an auxilliary ATF cooler to take some of the load off the rad - if you do soft sand driving or towing with an this is a good idea too.

I recently fitted a scoop and decided to add a thermo switched fan too. There are some people who reckon the fan will only be effective up to a certain speed and then hinder airflow at higher speeds (above 60kph is normally suggested). I personally don't think that the fan will hinder flow much (if at all), and if it does the benefits it gives at slow speeds far outweigh the potential small hindrance at 100kph when there is plenty of airflow through the scoop and rad anyway. Nobody has done any real data back tests (that I could find), so its a still subjective opinion. To make the fan more effective I have made a diy cowl (by taping up around the fan) for the intercooler so that all the air from the fan has to go through the intercooler and can't escape back up past the fan.

Did some mods prior to my latest trip. Added a custom 3" from exhaust dynamics in Somerton Park (Adelaide). Excellent service, excellent product. No more chocking, more power better economy and sounds good to boot. Also built custom jerry holder and lock box where 2nd row seats fit. worked a treat.Click image for larger version

Head cracked on a trip last year. In hindsight we think it was caused when I hit a washout (pretty damn hard) and the fan touched the radiator folding some of the veins. Didn't actually pick it up at the time and paid the price.

Trip this year was a breeze, only broke the antenna whip (due to corrugations) and an 1 x egg

I'm heading away at the end of the week and am thinking removal will be a good idea for space etc...

                                Cheers
