  • Setsujoku's 150 2010 GXL

Thought it would be good to get a bit of a build thread going, not only to show what I've done, but also for me to track some stuff like where I purchased things from Ebay from, and to help others in the future if needed, as so far I've come across a few things that I've had to spend a bit of time searching for, so hopefully it saves someone else the time next time!

Purchased second hand from a Toyota dealer with 66k km on the clock. Came fairly stock, with the only (very handy) additions being an ARB bull bar, and a set of BFG AT's that had only done 12k km.
Thankfully we were able to get a manual version, as there isn't many around, with only 4 for sale in the state at the time, with one of those actually over the border in Vic.
Also took the option of the extended 3 year warranty. So by the time it falls out of warranty it will be 6 1/4 years old.

Since picking up the following has been added:
    • Black Widow Draws - with fridge slide (picked up from Gum Tree for a steal). Also came with Fridge tie downs, some touch up paint for the car, dividers for the draws, cover for a draw to make it a table/work bench.
    • Recovery points - Also came with the draws for free. Like I said, it was a steal.
    • Black Widow Cargo barrier. From Adelaide offraod
    • Upgraded interior overhead lights to LED from ebay
    • Upgraded Interior door lights to LED's from Ebay
    • ARB Fog lights for the bull bar(was just empty gaps when purchased). From Adelaide offraod
    • Second battery, and Power to the rear of the car. Transferred over Piranha DB150s from old car.
    • 75W HID driving lights. From Sunyee Trading on Ebay
    • GME TX3540 UHF with Wireless PTT module. Transferred over GME AE4705 antennae from old car (see note about what not to do when removing from the old car!).
    • Genuine Toyota 3 rail heavy duty rails. See further note. Purchased from Sydney City Parts on Ebay
    • ABR dual battery monitor
    • ABR second battery tray

    Still to come:
    • Tinted Windows
    • Rock Sliders
    • Roof rack for the RTT and awning
    • Snorkel

For anyone else that rushes to remove the AE4705 from the car, like I did, as it was being picked up the following morning, and goes with the snipping the coax option at the bottom of the base.
You need to use a 19mm socket in to the top of the base to remove the inside connector, and then purchase part ABL004 for a new coax with the connector already joined. I purchased mine from Gadget City.

When researching the options for roof bars I was nearly at the point where I was going to have to accept the rather steep $527 for the set of 3 Rhino heavy duty rails. The roof rack itself is currently being made, so when that arrives I will post up details.

After stumbling upon an old thread for the 120 series on here I found that by going for the genuine Toyota option you can save a heap of cash. After a bit of ringing around the dealers here in Adelaide I found that with a few $ variance they all offered the same price, and none kept them in stock. The pretty standard price for a set is $396, which is a fair whack cheaper than the $527 that everyone else wants for the Rhino ones, which at the end of the day the Toyota ones are just rebadged Rhino.
In the end I have ordered them from Sydney city parts for $355 including delivery. So for the saving of $172 it was worth my time to research on here for half an hour!

For anyone else that goes looking, or is trying to get the part, the part number from toyota is PZQ3060190. I found that none of the dealers kept them in stock, so a couple of days turn around was required anyway.

Some pics, as they were a bit lacking in the first post.

Cargo area with Black Widow draws and 60L Waeco

HID's all running now after finding that a standard Narva rocker switch wont natively fit in the Prado. Ended up getting a type 1 switch from ABR, and since I was already ordering, added in a dual battery monitor as well. Already looking like a good idea, as I reckon that the main battery isn't quite healthy, but i'll keep an eye on it over the next few days, and if not swap it out for a spare marine pro 720 that I've got.

Also on the weekend it was all measured up for the rock sliders and roof rack, so they should arrive in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully the Heavy Duty roof rails will arrive tomorrow so that they can be fitted on the weekend.

Well the heavy duty rails arrived during the week, and didn't take long to fit yesterday. A quick read of an old thread here got me on the right track for removing the old GXL rails. 10 minutes later and they were all removed and the new ones ready to go.
It took about 1.5 hours all up to remove and add the new ones. I swear it didn't feel like it took that long as it was an easy job, and it didn't seem to take long at all. Following the instructions that come from Toyota made it easy and they didn't miss anything.
          End Result

Other purchase during the week was a Piranha big red compressor to go under the bonnet behind the air box on the drivers side. It's not in yet, but just a bit of soldering to do, and the addition of a fuse as I didn't realise the fuse holder from jaycar didn't come with one.
The compressor is mounting on a home made plate that was made by the guy that I bought the rear drawers off of. He chucked it in for free as he didn't need it any more, so that prompted the purchase of the compressor as well. It slots on to the existing 3 bolts that are behind the air box.
          Custom plate top
          Custom plate bottom
          Compressor mounted on plate

The other addition that I realised I hadn't listed is a set of MSA 4x4 front seat covers. They were actually the first addition, 2 days after picking up the car. Also got them for a steal off of Gum Tree. A lady had bought them for her parents as a present, but then they were selling the car, so she sold them still in their plastic packaging and box for $120 instead of the $400 original asking price from MSA!

Tinting booked for next month, and hopefully the rock sliders and roof rack are only a week away.

After a couple of alterations and a bit of fiddling, the compressor is now mounted nice and snug on the drivers side behind the air box.

Only addition I had to make was an elbow piece for the hose fitting as there wasn't enough space between the fitting and the firewall to be able to snap the hose on.
All mounted and ready to go
It is running off of the second battery with a 30A fuse, and controlled by a switch that is next to the fuse for easy access in the engine bay. Down the track I mgiht shift it off to be being controlled by a switch in the cabin, but for now this works.

Yeah it is getting there. For the most part it is just about ready to go. We are off to the Grampians next weekend, so that will give it a good test, and then refine further from there.

Picking up the roof rack tomorrow, and doing a second lot of measurements and an initial fitting of the rock sliders so that they can be refined before the final fitting. Will post pics of the roof rack once it is fitted, and also when it is loaded for the trip with the roof top tent, awning, etc.

Todays addition was the roof rack. It isn't fully finished yet, but it is going for a test run next weekend to iron out any issues and then go back to get the gas bottle holder fitted, and any other changes that we find. The awning mount will be added on Tuesday ready for the trip to the Grampians for the long weekend.

It's and aluminium rack made by Burtons Tube Worx. The front wind deflector collapses down to allow the rack to be flat when required. As we have a RTT the side brackets are only part length, but it can be made with the full length where required as well.

Just to prove that it is strong we gave it a test.

A few more pics of the rack

All flat and ready for getting in to car parks.
You can see in this one how the side pieces fold down flat. The wind deflector clips on to the rack to stop it from vibrating around, and also is cushioned by some rubber pads
                      With the wind defelctor raised
Another with it ready to go
This is without the side lifted up (forgot before taking the pic), and the rail for the awning mounts, which I'll hopefully get tomorrow, and then there will be more pics then!

Once we have given the feedback from this trip then the racks will go in to production and be available.
The biggest advantage of these are that they are generic to any car, so it's not like we are now having to buy a new rack next time we change the car. Plus they are super light, weighing in at only around 10kg, so really easy to lift up there, and not a heavy load on the roof either!

After the long weekend away testing the set up, this weeks only addition was to get the tinting done. A few hours at D&S Auto and it came back looking great.
Went with the Nano 18% tint, as it wasn't too much more expensive, but reduces the heat by a reasonable amount.

                        End Result

Only recent addition has been the delivery of some more SMD LED's from ebay. I've joined a couple of 36 panels together to give a greater spread of light for the interior cabin lights where there is space. Also replaced the last map light with a 36 panel as well, so now there are LED's all round.

                            Map Lights.
                            Cabin lights

Tomorrow the rock sliders get a trial fitting before being finished off and powder coated.

Hey mate the prado is coming along nicely! I'm doing a trip from
Darwin down to Clare Valley, over to coffins bay this Christmas and have come to the conclusion that I need a roof rack to fit everything! Your build ups got good info! Cheers. Huntertom
