The old side steps finally gave up the ghost.

Funny how all the damage was on Bek's side of the car - she must be really rough. :shock:

Anyhoo .... I picked up a pre-loved set of steps off Corbo ... who had a pain of a time trying to fit them to his car.


They are an awesome bit of gear ... but I've never yet seen a set bolt straight on out of the can.
Either that or Toyota makes subtle changes to the chassis and floorpan every year ... just to keep people on their toes.


Heaps of clearance with the old steps off.








A bit of cutting and welding. I moved the top bolt hole on the right rear back and inch to clear a pressing in the floorpan.
I also extended the bolt hole on the left rear (main tank side) an inch to pick up the existing hole in the chassis.

The option was to just drill another hole in the chassis .... but I wasn't that happy with drilling holes near a plastic fuel tank.






Everything bolted up quite nicely ...






... and now I have some steps that Bek can stand on without breaking them ....

... and little old ladies opening cars doors into them are gonna be sorry :lol: :lol: :lol:

They might come in handy off road too :roll:

I've got an '03 GXL and they had to be modified to fit

I gave Leachy a hand fitting the identical steps to his '06 GX and had to make the same mods to get them to fit.

MattWhite had to modify his to fit his '04 GXL - particularly in this shot ....

.... where you can see the extra hole he had to drill in the chassis for the left rear mounting plate to fit.




I really wasn't prepared to pay full price for something that I doubted would fit straight out of the box ...

... but I jumped at the chance of grabbing a 3rd hand set and making the mods I knew I would have to make.

That's the way to go. Personally I think the true weight bearing rock sliders are way too expensive for what they are...but I haven't built any myself yet.. :?
I'll have to keep my eye out. The original (bent) GX ones are horrible to look at so I'd like the replace them at some point.

Good on ya Chippy.... I like a bit of DIY.

One tip when removing the factory steps (which you may have already done); put the bolts back in the holes in the floor because they go right through and over time your sills will fill with crud which will promote rust. :wink:

Very nice Chippy, steps look the part. No time wasted on getting them installed.

Side note: The brackets all fitted the GX but the steps just needed to move forward a couple inches when i fitted them, (Chippy's mod resolved that). Anyhow i made a template of the brackets so i might have to have a crack at a DIY set I reckon.

Another point with those steps on my GX is that they stuck out due to the flareless nature of GX's which just didn't look right. A skinner step would suit.
