Just a little flex in the rear showing a little shock...
So how do the Icons go? Well, in a word, brilliant. All round the rig feels much more planted than the soft wallowing whale of a thing it was from the factory. After coming from a relatively tight little euro, the stock suspension in this felt like wading through soggy Wheatbix.
On the road, it's compliant and firm but not too firm. It swallows up bumps like they're simply not there, doesn't dive under brakes even with the bar & winch up front, is relatively flat around corners (considering it's height & bulk) even when being somewhat spirited but doesn't give you a bone jarring ride.
Off road though is where these things really shine and in particular high speed bumps/corrugations. In situations where it use to bounce around like along the beach or across dunes etc, it's now a little like you're wafting across it on a cloud. No porpoising or bouncing wheels into the air, just control. Corrugated roads are a similar story. Sure, you still feel it but what a difference.
The other point of note is the fade or rather, lack there of. On a recent trip through the Gascoyne/Murchison region, fully loaded we were skirting around GVM. I was shocked (no pun intended) to say the least at how well these performed. Even in mid 30s with all the weight on board and after 50km of corrugations, there was no noticeable fade. Considering I only went with the Stage 1 kit that doesn't have remote reservoirs, I am very impressed.
Yes, again there are more photo's to come. Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to update a little more particularly since the installation of the spot lights and fuel filter. Having said that, we're expecting significant rain over the weekend and rain = mud. Sunday may well be a mud day
@the5goodwins:
Glad you like the wheels. I loved the look of the new Altitude wheels and tried to find a dealer who'd do a straight swap but none of them would come to the party. But one enterprising dealer suggested that he'd have them custom painted as part of the deal. Naturally I agreed. It worked out to around $120ish a wheel from memory but worth it IMHO. They're actually a deep metalic gun metal type colour (Toyota colour code 1G3) and look sh*t hot when it's all clean. Far better than the grandpa silver.
It's becoming quite a popular thing to do now it would seem with plenty taking the rattle can or plasti dip route. Horses for courses I guess.
One thing I will say though is they are prone to battle scars and although I've only been through seriously gnarly terrain a few times, there's already a few scuffs. Some will polish out, others wont. The other point is when the wheels are balanced, the marks left behind by the removal of the old weights is a little painful to look at although they're far easier to patch up than the scuffs on the outer face.Last edited by Drift; 04-12-2015, 09:39 PM.
