I’ve struggled to find good information on the ECU style piggy back modules and read tonnes of information regarding tuning and There’s lots of conflicting statistics with reliability of the engine once “tuned”. What made you set on the steinbauer before installing it ?
Im really looking to wake up the 2.8 but I’m not that keen on blowing it up due to a sub par tune or piggyback module.... now this is the conflicting part for me, i do high performance engine tuning regularly and I’ve done some tuning on diesels with the “Kess” platform but honestly Kess is a generic style cut and paste tune method and nothing about it is custom so I’m not in a rush to use that method at all but something like steinbauer may very well be a generic module but looks like it’s had alot of R&D per make and model it suits
just wondering what made you go that way and what comfort you have from knowing it’s not going to damage your new prado ( just like I’ve got ) as I’m still very new to the scene

Hey mate,
I’m no expert by any means so I don’t have a in depth knowledge as to what you would consider safe or not.
You need to consider that any increase in output will one way or another cause extra heat/stresses on your vehicle. I guess the further you push the vehicle to gain performance the more likely there is to be issues/failures.
For me the steinbauer modules have been around for many years with many positive reviews.
The ability to remove the unit with ease prior to each service with no recollection of it being installed was definitely something that swayed my decision. If things were to go bad, the module was “never there”.
The steinbauer modules only adjust the injector duration rather than the rail pressure which is another factor that I liked.
The steinbauer gives smaller gains than other tuning methods but I was never chasing huge power, Rather than something that gave the Prado a bit more of a “drivability” feeling.
(Which is precisely what it has done)
Also picking it up for a great price was another incentive to make the purchase.
Totally makes sense to me and probably one of the reasons it’s the most desirable option for an ecu style increase
I’m still getting into the diesels and the pros n cons to tuning but again being so new to it all i just can’t be sure yet
it’s like the performance style tuning i do on a regular basis for gasoline vehicles is a well worn path so i know beyond a doubt the safe limits i can push from an engine and there on in where things fail, in the past I’ve literally R&D’d my own vehicles to these points but I suppose this isn’t a vehicle i really want to do it with for now
the ease of removing before services is brilliant and should be undetected which is great. I think i might just have to get one and do some before and after’s on my Dyno to see what’s what !
Looking forward to see what you do next as im always on the verge of a next modification myself even though a bar and lights with a winch isn’t very exciting haha

Thanks again for the reply mate.
I also am interested to see what the real gains at the wheels the steinbauer is giving me.
I have a relative who has a vehicle performance workshop nearby so am thinking I will head down and see him to get it on the dyno.
That way I can get some real world figures of, with and without the steinbauer for you.
Front window tint completed today. Hopefully rhino rack and backbone arrive this week too so I can get them fitted up.
Very clean and tidy build up.

Well I actually had it installed for the last 300km but removed it for the 1,000km complimentary service so our friends at Toyota don’t see it.
So tonight it was reinstalled. A little neater than I previously had.
Really happy with the gain in performance.
I guess the best explanation is “drivability”.
The car just drives a whole lot nicer imo.
No “mind blowing” increase in power but that isn’t what I was after. It just feels soo much better.
All in all.
Very happy.
Been thinking about the module for some time although only to improve things when towing.
I think you would be happy with the extra grunt this module gives you.
Although if you are not concerned about warranty issues I would still recommend a quality Ecu remap as an alternative. A good tuner will safely tune you car to suit towing
