I taught at the Brisbane College of Photography and Art from 1996 - 2011. Finished teaching there Jan last year to focus on my photography career which got lost somewhere in amongst all that teaching.
Now I'm full time Corporate and Commercial photography... I do miss the teaching but I'm loving shooting full time again!!

Keep an eye on this section as it looks like I'll be ambushed by the 2011 GTG committee to come up with a workshop that I promised them last year

Ian, my first camera was an Pentax SP1000... still had a screw mount! How much fun was that

The first SLR camera I bought when I was a student in the 1970s was a Pentax K1000 - built like a brick, fully manual everything with a mechanical shutter and could run battery free, albeit without metering. I survived a while with just one lens, 50mm f1.4, but soon started to expand the lens collection. When I bought my next camera body it was necessarily a Pentax so I could retain the growing suite of lenses. I am now on my 9th camera body K-5 and also still use K-20D. I would probably move to Canon-Nikon if I could afford to replace my whole kit but most of my spare $$ have been sucked into the mobile hide (Prado 150 GX).

I still have an old screw mount lens somewhere...must tidy up the old camera cupboard one day - the old lenses might be getting antique value soon ;-)

If I was a pro, I probably wouldn't choose Pentax either! Largely on account of the flash system, and the lack of pro support.

No concerns, however, regarding image quality.

I think they have been superseeded now but I have a Nikon D90 that has really allowed me to grow into my photography. Has all teh functionality you need for when you need it but can point and shoot with amazing results if you dont want to think to much about it. I also have a single 18 - 200 VR Lens. Keeping it simple, no changing lenses when bogged in sand!
Avoiding all eye contact I shamefully stare down at my muddy feet and softly announce... "My name is Dale and I am a 4WD accessories addict".

Nothing wrong with that it's a great combo. I have six top quality lenses but at least three only get used a few times a year. My frequently used are
                    16-85mm Nikon
70-300mm Nikon (those two cover most shots)
35mm f1.8 gets used a bit mostly low light

                    Not so frequent
12-24mm tokina (used less now that I have the 16-85)
150mm macro Sigma (great lens but do little macro)
50mm f1.4g nikon, great lens but the 35mm has a better length I find

Yes I could sell them but even little use justifies keeping them.
My mate uses my old D5000 with 18-270mm tamron and gets some great results though.

Don't own one myself as I maintained Sony equipment to be compatible with my old Minolta lenses etc from my film days, but you can't go past Canon. They own the patents on the best digital SLR technology, so everyone has to reinvent the wheel and play catch up.
2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear. On the list: cargo barrier, Bilstein shocks and King springs, deluxe winch bar, 10000lb winch, Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights, dual spare wheel carrier

Lets be honest take a photo with a new Pentax, Sony, Canon, Nikon etc and their all outstanding and no one could pick which was which..High ISO shots I would say Nikon have the edge but general day to day shots most DSLR's even the entry level stuff is better than a PRO camera from 5-6 years ago. The key to good photos is learning the art of photography (60%) and learning post processing(40%) any new camera will give you a good enough shot to work with IF your composition, exposure etc is OK. Have a look at the iphone gallery from Chase Jarvis its puts most of us to shame and puts photography and equipment into perspective.

I started of with KonicaMinolta and a few lenses then bought a Sony A100, my first digital DSLR. Found the upgrade path in the Sony range in particular the lenses, a bit too hard and expensive relative to Canon. Still like what Sony is doing, but at the time the Canon 7D ticked all the boxes for me. Also got a P&S, that mainly lives in the wife`s handbag.
I like the fact that there is a few manufacturers bringing out new good products, keeps the competition in the market, I am not particular brand loyal. But once you have invested in a system, there is no point in changing. Bit like a Prado really.

I really enjoy wildlife/birds, nature and macro photography and having two kids they are a big part of our photography. Did try my hand at the Melbourne Grand Prix on Saturday, but taking photos through the fence is frustrating. My own fault should have focused more on the other attractive things.

Don`t necessarily agree with Ken Rockwell being a good source of information. I think he is just there to get people to his website writes some conflicting/controversial, but not particular useful stuff, actually I think he is a tool.

Exactly. Know your gear, capitalize on its strengths, work out how to best manage the weaknesses. Then be happy.

My tip of the day: invest in a good tripod.

Hey maxjj, why don't you tell us what you really think? ;-)

Have to agree with you though. His site is full of self promotion and ridiculous claims and generalisations. My favourite is "With a digital camera with Image Stabilization or VR, there's no need for a tripod". Really?! Anyone who can say this without any understanding of what, where and how the person is shooting is full of --it. Try handholding a low light waterfall shot or if you want max depth of field, etc. I don't know why he provides this sort of advice - there's nothing in it for him to be wrong. If you shoot any form of landscape, the single best thing you can do to improve your photography is buy a tripod - a good quality, big one. The second thing you need to do is buy a gym membership (or a Prado) so you can lug it around all over the countryside ;-)
