Nikon or Canon

Yup - if I ever abandon Sony in the mid-term will go with the Canon 7D. The HD video is just a bonus. Ditto on the P&S shoot that lives in the kid's nappy bag and missus and I also have an iPhone each. There are some good compact cameras like the Panasonic Lumix on the market now with changeable lenses.

I started of with KonicaMinolta and a few lenses then bought a Sony A100, my first digital DSLR. Found the upgrade path in the Sony range in particular the lenses, a bit too hard and expensive relative to Canon. Still like what Sony is doing, but at the time the Canon 7D ticked all the boxes for me. Also got a P&S, that mainly lives in the wife`s handbag.
I like the fact that there is a few manufacturers bringing out new good products, keeps the competition in the market, I am not particular brand loyal. But once you have invested in a system, there is no point in changing. Bit like a Prado really.

I really enjoy wildlife/birds, nature and macro photography and having two kids they are a big part of our photography. Did try my hand at the Melbourne Grand Prix on Saturday, but taking photos through the fence is frustrating. My own fault should have focused more on the other attractive things.


Don`t necessarily agree with Ken Rockwell being a good source of information. I think he is just there to get people to his website writes some conflicting/controversial, but not particular useful stuff, actually I think he is a tool.

I have always said, it is not what you use, but how you use it.
Nikon has its good points, but I am a Canon man..

Just picked up a shiny new Canon 5DmkIII
Had a quick play with the demo body at the shop and its looking good. Focus is soooo much faster than the mkII and they have added a few little things that I had previously wanted on the mkII as well.

The $12,000.00 1Ds mkIII will become the backup to the backup
The 5D mkII and the mkIII will be the combo kit for most jobs now.

Sad when such an expensive pro body is replaced by a sub $4000 pro-sumer body.

D200 just died after a dodgy CF card fried the reader in the camera. 2 days till we go to South america! Bugger!!!

Thinking a D7000 will be the go so we can use our Nikon lenses.
I prefer the Nikon but its another coke/pepsi debate!

I've done a couple of jobs with it now and a few family piccies etc...
It's a welcome improvement over the mkII in many ways.

The focus is soooo much better and the focus grid is much larger so is actually big enough to use the new 100% viewfinder properly.
High ISO images are great! I haven't really kept up with Nikons high ISO cameras but this brings Canon back into the ISO fight IMHO.
This shot is at 25600 ISO under warm CFL's in my lounge room. It's a 100% crop of the focused point.
There seems to be more 'Colour' noise in it rather than 'Luminance' noise. this is a basic conversion but with 35 Luminance and 30 Colour noise reduction applied in CS5's ACR.



A few other little things like a locking mode dial (doesn't seem like much but when you have two cameras with different lens' over the shoulder and one moves to Bulb mode or P mode in the middle of a shoot it can mean missing the shot completely)
A level built in (I think Nikon have had that for a while) is quite accurate. Have used it a couple of time on some architectural stuff today.
Quite buttons for when in Video mode so you don't hear clicks in the sound recording.

I'm sure there's more to be found but I've been able to swap out the mkII body with the mkIII body and keep working without much faffing around so that's a good thing too.

That 100%crop at that ISO s fantastic.
I took quite a few shots at TuffTruck at night, ISO3200 and they didn't come out too bad, but need lots of adjustment in pp.

Thanks for the review, now to start the "justification" with SWMBO....

Agree with these two as small but very nice to haves. The Pentax K-5 has both (old K-20d does not) and I really like them. The mode lock in particular is something I have been wanting for a long time. My fumble fingers often knock the mode from Av to Tv when getting camera out of the bag or when extracting the camera/tripod from it's usual resting place belted into the rear seat in the car as I madly scramble to get the first shot off of a bird or disappearing rear end of a wallaby/kangaroo etc and my automatic dial twiddling to adjust exposure fails dismally until I work out what's going on. Yes, I know, it only takes a few seconds to check but with wildlife, a few seconds often means not getting the shot. The level works well too - checks out pretty spot on with a hotshoe mounted spirit level.

I think the equivalent of 60D for nikon is the D5100.

I am also a Canon user.
5D mk1, 7D, 24-70mm, 70-200mm (f/4), 50mm (f/1.4)
