  • Wide angled lens for Canon 60D

    Howdy All,

I'm in the market for a wide angled lense for the wife for Christmas for her Canon 60D with a Tamron 18-270(I think).
We are heading off to the Kimberley's next June-July for 7 weeks and she wants something for good senic stuff.

Were not on a budget for this, I just want to buy something that will do the job really well. Was thinking about a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM but I have no idea? Will it do the job? What are your suggestions?
    Any help would be good.

    Cheers Adam

I can't access Bendman's link but I have the Canon EFS 15-85mm with my 60D. This lens is rated very highly and the glass is considered on par with the L series lenses; Canon don't make L models in the EFS lenses. I purchased mine as a grey import from T-Dimension :- http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/le...sm-lens-p-1954

I bought mine from their eBay store though as they offered a free 5yr warranty as standard there :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/A0334-Can...item5ae2152963

Shipping was quick and service excellent, I'm very happy with this lens. I also picked up a knock-off EW-78E lens hood from eBay, much cheaper than the Canon one and does the job just as well.

I have the 17-55 f2.8, a great lens, but Ondaboat may be looking for something a little wider.
I found myself doing stitches to get around the problem on my last trip.

Ondaboat mentioned the 16-35mm 2.8L hence why I suggested the 15-85; it has a wider range and is cheaper but not as fast as the L. I had a 12-24mm Sigma as well but sold it since it was a full frame optimised lens and on a crop body the range is actually around 19mm - 38mm so I saw no advantage in keeping it. Now a Canon EFS 10-22 on the other hand would be a worthy contender.

Canon 10-22mm is in my kit bag and it's one awesome lens. It controls flare extremely well and picture quality is brilliant - as good as any L lens.

Can't really help with a recommendation, but I did find what seemed to be good prices while searching for the missus on top buy.com.au. Plenty of lenses there and bodies. There 5D Mark III is under $2700 for an idea.

            Cheers,

I have the 15-85mm lens as my normal kit lens and 18-270 VC Tamron which I also use.
My 10-24mm Tamron is a great wide lens which I now hardly use (due to the 15-85, as it serves me fine) and will most probably sell.
                I also use a Canon 60D.

I bought the 16-35 f/2.8 about 6 months ago and so far am not overly impressed with it. The quality, saturation and soft edges all combine to give less than favourable results. However it is wide enough (on a full-frame 5D MkII) for the realestate etc photography that I do. Just keep in mind that the crop factor for a 60D is 1.6x, so a 15mm lens has the same field of view as a 24mm on a FF camera. I also havve (had) a 17-85mm IS and would NEVER buy one again.

I had the 17-85mm and now have the 15-85mm. The 15-85mm is a much better lense.

                        Thanks for the replys everyone.

Well after another big night of doing nothing (on night shift) surfing the net, I'm leaning towards the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. Just wondering what else I should get for it?

                        Regards Adam

Circular Polarising Filter - good quality. However, just be mindful of photos at extremely wide angles with lots of sky in them as the filter will make part of the blue sky a rich deep blue and other parts a bit washed out.

You could also get a ND8 or ND400 filter - great for slowing the shutter speed down on bright days.
I use an ND8 when i do waterfall shots with long exposures.
