Planning to take a year or two off and do a lap (or two) of the backyard plus o/s from mid 2013 and will need a decent camera for stills. Will try out a GoPro for video particularly 4wd'ing around Oz.

I like the look of the 7D packaged with the 15-85mm so thought I'd ask the PP knowledge bank if for around the $2.5k mark, is that the bees knees at the moment?

I have some pre-digital age lenses (28-200mm, 50mm, 2x convertor etc) from an old Pentax SLR. Would they fit the Canon range and any quality degradation if using older, albeit good quality 35mm lenses on Digital SLR's?

I use a 15-85 IS USM EF-S lens, which is an excellent general purpose lens, along with a Tamron 18-270VC Piezo lens.
With these 2 lenses I feel that I have all my photographic needs covered - the 15-85 is on the camera 90% of the time.
I also have a Tamron 10-24mm which I hardly use.

Your Pentax lenses won't fit the Canon unfortunately. If you wish to use them you may need to look at a Pentax Digital SLR.

Thanks SGS, think I'll stick with the Canon. My, what huge market share they have now!

Been looking at the 7D but also like the new 6D with it's GPS and Wi-Fi. Still learning what "full frame" is all about but it would be nice to also use the iPhone as a wireless remote. I have a Seagate GoFlex Satellite 500gb for mobile storage of iPhone pics and downloaded TV shows and movies to watch via the iPad when on the road. Heaps of capacity to link wirelessly to the Canon for backup of pics.

Placed an order with JB HiFi for the Hero3 Black with Wi-Fi remote. Hopefully due in next week.

Full frame basically refers back to the 35mm film/negative format - means it's the same size and aspect ratio.
The 60D uses an APS-C sensor which is a smaller sensor and which creates a multiplication factor (1.6 on Canon, but can different on other makes).
Therefore your standard 35mm lenses get multiplied by 1.6 to get a 35mm equivalent if you use them on a APS-C sensor camera.
Or multiply your EF-S lens by 1.6 to get the 35mm (full frame) equivalent. 18-55 becomes 28.8-88mm - standard wide angle to zoom.
You can use 35mm lenses on APS-C cameras, but APS-C lenses do not fit a full frame due to their extra length on the mount side of the lense.
Hope this clears it up for you a bit.

I just got an email from Kogan to say the 650D with 18-55 is on offer for 24hrs at $529 plus postage - that's $20 less than I paid a few weeks back for the 600D for my daughter's Chrissy present

As the new 70D is coming out in September, JB HiFi have the 60D with 18-55 Lens for $749 but until Sunday they've got 15% off all Cameras (except GoPro), so only $636.65. I'm so tempted by this - even Kogan still want $709 plus postage for a grey import.

I don't know what price the 70D will be but I doubt I will be able to justify/afford it. I'm seeing the 450D at $400 plus on Gumtree and on eBay for around $250 plus postage so I should be able to get $300 to $350 for mine.

So, what do you guys think - is it worth grabbing a 60D at this price?

It's ok Bendman i'm sure Trekrider means it as in the underground slang form which is basicly advertising that he likes to dress up as a woman and is looking or "hunting" for more like minded people like himself and Dame Edna who is known for her quote "hello possums"

I could make it 'Professional Possum Poker' but that would be just plain weird (and open to interpretation) Plus it won't fit!

Hey Trekrider, I was going to chime in till I saw that profile comment. Please clarify where you stand on possums.

OK, bowing to pressure, I've changed it - are we all friends again?

Fido I think after his last comment it's perfectly clear he is a man who loves his high heels and stockings

Edit: no it appears he's come to his senses and gone back to a pair of jeans.

Don't be scared, possums are our friends (well our trained ones are).

In answer to your query re the 60D. If the 18-55 lens is the standard kit lens don't bother, it's cr@p. It will do the job but is not very sharp and the build quality isn't great (plasticky).

I have a 60D with the EFS 15-85 mm f3.5 - 5.6 IS lens (have other lenses too but this is my walkaround lens) and I'm very happy with it. I got the 60D from DWI and the lens from T-Dimension, no problems with either seller and delivery was fast.

Lots of sample shots from me in the Wombat trip thread, all taken with the 15-85mm :-

The best pics are from around pg8 onwards. Bear in mind they have been resized by Postimage, the full res images are too big to upload.

Did you know the 60D shoots video too?
