In answer to your query re the 60D. If the 18-55 lens is the standard kit lens don't bother, it's cr@p. It will do the job but is not very sharp and the build quality isn't great (plasticky).

I have a 60D with the EFS 15-85 mm f3.5 - 5.6 IS lens (have other lenses too but this is my walkaround lens) and I'm very happy with it. I got the 60D from DWI and the lens from T-Dimension, no problems with either seller and delivery was fast.

Lots of sample shots from me in the Wombat trip thread, all taken with the 15-85mm :-

Bear in mind they have been resized by Postimage, the full res images are too big to upload.

Did you know the 60D shoots video too?
I know what you mean with the 18-55 lens - my 450D came with one and it didn't last long. I didn't drop it or damage it in any way but it just stopped working. I ended up using the 35-70 from my old 35mm EOS camera on the 450D. The 35-70 feels very solid compared to the 18-55.

The deal with JB HiFi is with the 18-55 lens so I was thinking of putting the new 18-55 on my 450D and selling it. The 35-70 would then go on the 60D.

I'm looking to get my daughter the 18-200 f3.5-5.6 IS lens for her rapidly approaching Birthday so I will look to see how that performs. The 15-85 looks good though.

Yes, I did know it shoots video. It also has the live view which is new for me.

You could do that or just sell the body and lens separately, might get more overall. Which lens is the 35-70 though and will it be compatible?

I don't have any experience with the 18-200 but the 15-85 mm is as close as you will get to an L series lens in the EFS series, the glass is very good.

It's an EF 35-70 F3.5-4.5 and quite old but I've always been happy with it. It works on my 450D and my daughter's 600D so I can't imagine it won't work on the 60D.

The 18-55 can't be worth much as they are only $89 new.

What SD card do I need for the 60D? I have a Class 4 in the 450D and it's OK for storing the JPG images but if I record the RAW file as well I can only take about three consecutive shots before it stops whilst it catches up.

I've been told to get a Class 10 card but not all Class 10 cards are equal. I'm looking at either a 45MB/s or 95MB/s - I know faster is generally better with storage but I guess it's limited by the camera and may not be worth paying double the price.

I'm using a 32gb Patriot LX Series I picked up cheaply from MSY, I also have Sandisk Ultras (the 45MB/s ones). So far so good, all are Class 10 but I haven't really tried shooting video or RAW images yet.

BTW, you'll probably sell that 450D with lens as a beginner rig so yes leaving it as a package will work.

SD class 10 cards sounds like what you need. There are various grades though but the basic one will do. I shoot RAW with my Nikon D700 at weddings, etc and have no issues using basic speed CF cards. But I guess the buffer is pretty good on the D700.

Thanks Andrew, basic one it is

But seriously this is a serious thread and small possum raiding parties that fly under the radar are funny but we really don't want to get in the bad book. So lets all get back to SWMBO Treck you are very welcome to join us.
It seems to me that every thread comes under attack by the PLKLC (Possum Loving, Kaka Latte Club)

I don't have a 150 let alone one of those Kaka things, I don't drink Latte and I have learnt the hard way about saying anything derisory about Possums

And, seeing as you are abbreviating my name, why are you adding an extra 'c' - I thought the idea of abbreviating was to make things shorter?

OK, back on topic - I have just been to JB HiFi and bought a 60D, unfortunately they didn't have any left in the local store so have to get one sent down from the city. I should be getting it early next week.

If anyone is in the market for a very good condition 450D with all the manuals, charger, leads, software, 32GB SD card and a brand new 18-55 lens then let me know.

How's this for really knowing your camera - whilst putting together an advert for my 450D I found out it actually does have live view! ops:

I never looked into it before as I have always used the viewfinder but my daughter only uses live view on her 600D as she has to wear glasses and the viewfinder adjuster won't go far enough. I know you can get a corrector for the viewfinder but she doesn't want to use it as it would mean taking her glasses on and off. Seems strange to me but I was brought up on standard viewfinders. For me, I would have to put my glasses on to use live view as I only need them for reading or close work so counter productive anyway.

Live view is good for photographing the moon or sun or other 'small' item. You can go to live view and zooooooooom in to check focus.

Yeah I've got a Canon 7D, & my mate has a Canon 60D, but once you have the camera body, but it's all in your lens you buy which makes a massive difference in quality. Plus all Canon lenses will fit the Canon aps-c sensor cameras it's only when you buy a Full Frame then you can only put the full frame lenses on them. Also you can buy third party lenses for the Canon you just have to make sure it is for a Canon mount .

Sorry mate thats not correct. You can use any of the Canon lenses on any Canon cameras. The rub is the focal length of the lens changes if you use it on a camera with a crop sensor.

In the Canon world, you can use full-frame EF lenses on crop bodies but not vice versa. i.e. you can't put an EF-S lens on a full frame body.

Ah yes, sorry. I've never bothered with EF-S lenses.
