  • WINNER in Eureka Science Photography Award

Well, the Awards dinner was held in Sydney (here at the moment) on Tuesday Night and I'm pleased to say I was an equal first Eureka Prize winner
So, I have a nice trophy to take home and a nice bit of cash in the bank account!
It was a great night, black tie, with a few interesting people there - Kate Blanchet being the most recognised I guess. Found it quite funny that a simple bloke from Tas got to rub shoulders with some of the big wigs of science.
Had the head of ABC TV find me and ask me if I'm available for running some high speed vid cameras for them at some stage and met a few other people that might help me get a job in the next few months. Anyway, it was worth the trip up to Sydney from Melb. Heading off today to Jindabyne, camping along the snowy for a few days, and where ever else we end up.
    Cheers, Phil.

Not related to Prado's whatsoever but I'm pretty excited so thought I'd share it here.
I've been selected as one of six finalists for the Eureka Science Awards New Scientist Science Photography Award.
The winner gets $5K and there are a few more K spread over 2nd & 3rd. The winner is announced at the Eureka Gala Dinner along with winners of the other 15 or so awards on 18 August.
This is the pic that did it:

It's a pic of a modeling balloon being burst with a needle while it's underwater. The sound triggered the flash at 1/7500th second or thereabouts.
Despite the fact it's a fun sort of pic to make, there's a lot of information scientists gather from photos like this for working out how pressure vessel explosions work etc.
Anyway - that's my excitement for the next few weeks!
The Eureka Awards site is here: http://eureka.australianmuseum.net.au/
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

Mate, I wish I could do something like that. I have the patience to do this, just not the time nor the knowledge (and the type of quality camera you must have).

Seriously though that is an awesome photo and lets hope you can snatch first prize. Congratulations

Yeah well, I think the actual title is something like Australian Museum Eureka Science Awards New Scientist (sponsor) Science Photography Award
At uni we just call it "The Eureka Award"

The Equipment isn't all that hard to get hold of or expensive really. The trigger setup is a Jaycar one which cost us about $70 I think (but it's not a standard item). I've since upgraded to a Nikon D700 but the shot was taken on a Pentax *istD - the first ever Pentax DSLR - only 6Mp with a 100mm macro. I bought an old fish tank from the local aquarium for $40 and the trigger is rigged up to a studio flash which costs about $12000 but you can actually use (and get a shorter exposure time) a handheld flash unit. I've shot more recent stuff with my Nikon flash. Oh, and a few packs of modeling balloons and...an old camping jaffle iron as a weight to hold the balloon underwater
Most of this stuff is pretty easy to do cheaply...it's just that once you do it you then want all the expensive gear...which leaves you asking "do I spend this $1K on a lens or a new ... for the Prado :?

                  That looks cool 8)

I'm glad you explained how you did it, I thought it was upside down and the baloon was full of water.. Lucky I'm not an investigator or something important...

                  Well done, and good luck..
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Re: Finalist in Eureka Science Photography Award

Thanks again. MickL, I had heard it was in there but haven't seen a copy being over here so if you happen to still have a copy, I'll chuck you a few dollars to send it over. Let me know and I'll PM my address.
Zookcubr, you would be surprised what people do actually think they can do with technology. At my old job 5 years ago, in a panorama photographers gallery we had a number of people ask "are these all downloaded from the internet"...this was in Tassie in a town where dialup was the in word  Some of our images were 80 inches long and to print them at the right resolution we'd have to download for a millennium

Then there's the people who see you using a brand new large format camera and because you're under the dark cloth they say..."wow, that camera must be soooo old!"

or the fun tricks to use on jobs...I carry a light meter around my neck at weddings and never use it much - it's there because people instantly think you're the "professional photographer" and do what you say. One day I'm gonna do it at a wedding where I'm not the official photographer if I decide I don't like the designated one...hang on, there could be some money in this - turn up to weddings, take all the shots and they'd have to come to you for the images    Enough stupidity  It's late - night Ppoint
