Re: what camera do ya use for ya pix

Just have a Canon EOS 10D (have had it for some time) and a Sony Cybershot W55 (7.2 Mpix) that sits in my carry bag so it is always with me.

      Hey T.P. and Andrew,
What's your thoughts on the 28-70 and 24-70 f2.8? Are they both FX lenses? If so, Pros, Cons? I need to get a short zoom but I'd really like the 24mm Tilt Shift for landscapes. Also would like a few more SB900's.

I bought the 24 to see how it stacked up against th 28. Both so bloody close, but the 24 piups it because of the nano-coating. also a little bit lighter. which is nice.

Be better with the 14-24 or 24-70 or 20 2.8 for scapes. The tilt shift really offsets the focus I find. Thats my next buy but prob a 40mm, thats the biggest seller according to Nikon.

            Both are FX lenses.

I had the 28-70/2.8 on my D50 before. I knew that I was going to go for FX, so resisted on buying the 17-55/2.8DX. The 24-70 came about due to a small drop where the front of the lens hit the floor with the D700 attached. The impact pushed the lens cap in which shattered the UV filter, which caused scratches to the front element. So i couldn't compare the 2 side by side.

Insurance provided me with the 24-70/2.8 and it appears to be a little better. Handling wise, the body is narrower in diameter than the 28-70. It feels slender and lighter but according to specs, there is not much weight difference. It goes wider to 24 but I feel that there's a bit of distortion there. I don't think it will be very good for group shots where the person is right at the edge of the frame. For landscapes, it is more versatile being able to go wider. But I use my 20/2.8 for 'scapes.

The nano crystal coating is supposedly better for flare control. My hobby is mainly shooting events and I will encounter spotlights from any angle. With the hood on, I have not noticed any flare.

I still prefer the 24-70 because of it's wider focal length. Otherwise both are very close to each other.

Thanks for that T.P. and Andrew. I like to hear from real people rather than web reviews..
Being trained for a few years using tilt and sometimes shift for almost every shot I took (on 4x5), I really miss it on other cameras I use. I'm so desperate that I'm making an adapter for my 700 to go on my 4x5. It wont be suitable for many shots but for a few applications it will be ideal. Let me know if you get it. I have a few friends who have them and love them.

We had one made up for our Canon system at the studio.

Works great for jewellery (life size and greater at about 40cm away... plenty of room to get light onto the subject) but because we didn't maintain the position of the film plane doesn't it's not so good in the non-macro world

That's exactly what I'm doing. Nice working distance there at 1:1. What lens(es) are you using on the 4x5? Do you find any sharpness issues due to COC problems?
I'm not thinking anything other than macro/closeup for this. Also, when using movements, do you find that because the sensor is well back in the body you have vignetting due to the lens mount area?

Can you clarify what you mean by: "we didn't maintain the position of the film plane" as you're surely shooting through viewfinder/live view/tethered? Or are you swapping between 4x5 film & digital (in which case I understand completely). If that's what you're doing, is this a result of the demise of polaroid? :?

                        Hi Phil,
I was at the studio yesterday doing some portraits but ran out of time to get the 5x4 out to take a measurement.

The way we attached the camera was we had a lens mount from a 'lens baby' cut off and attached to a plate that attached to the rear standard. Because of the depth of the camera and the clearance needed to clear the handgrip etc... the film plane now sits a good 50-60mm behind the rear standard. Using the standard concertina bellows we cant reduce them enough to get infinity focus. With a wide angle 'bag' bellows we might be able to. Hence the 'only good for macro'... at this stage.
I can't remember the FL's we have as the 5x4 is another photographers in the studio. I'll be back in the studio on Wednesday so I'll have a look.

We had mixed results when we compared the sharpness between cameras.
My old Canon 20D was fairly sharp... the Canon 5D mkI was quite soft and the 1Ds mkIII was sharper again than the 20D. We haven't done a direct comparison between cameras since getting the 5d mkII but we have shot jewellery on it and it almost out-resolves the lens.
I suspect the digital issue of 'Fuzzy Disc' will come into play when shooting at smaller apertures (I can't find a link to Nick Rains' article on the subject ). I haven't explored this issue yet though.

I haven't done any movements with the lens... sorry, I should change that to I haven't done any major movements. Slight rear tilts to correct verticals on a product but nothing like a scheimpflug movement. I guess the small sensor relative to the image circle cast by the lens would allow for fairly heavy movements b4 seeing any vignetting.
                        Cheers, Leon

I'd be happy to have a good SLR camera, but for general use (travel, family, etc) I don't think you can go wrong with the Panasonic Lumix digital cameras. My wife's been using one to great effect for over 12 months, and I've recently bought one of the new DCM TZ7's. I'm wrapped in it and what it can do - fits in the jeans pocket, fantastic 12X optical zoom, anti-shake, good HD video, virtually idiot proof (but I'm still trying). Definitely worth checking out if you want something convenient that will take fantastic shots.
                              Happy clicing

Yes, you're right in theory but my worry would be the fact that the sensor is set so far back inside the body of the camera that the lens mount (on the body) would be the cause of vignetting.

I've been interested in testing effects on colour due to scheimpflug. Sensors react differently to film in that the light has to hit them at a more direct angle (preferably straight on) so the light can reach the base of the photo-wells. This is the main reason for all the new "digital" lenses on the market. The micro-lenses do some work in bending that light in but when you have extreme tilt surely colour reproduction would be compromised. Sinar did play with making digital 4x5 lenses for digi backs for some time but I don't think they continued with it.

Anyway, when it comes down to it, you've proved it works so I'd best get mine made! Sometimes I overthink the science of equipment too much and should be enjoying photography for what it used to be...an artform

Travelman: I played with a Panasonic a few days ago and was pretty impressed with what I expected to be a flimsy, lower standard consumer camera. The options in exposure adjustment and other things was very good.
