  • Little rescue story

So I was on my way to the Wandin 4WD show last weekend - light rain falling.
Just got through Belgrave South going down the steep hill towards Belgrave, I stopped to set the Tom Tom.
Out corner of my eye I noticed a small car down the side of the hill on other side of the road, with the bonnet up.
Didn't think anything of it - stolen and abandoned cars are common around there.
All of a sudden there's a knock on my window  what the heck's going on ??
Girl about 20 or so "do you think you could tow my car out of the ditch ?"
Apprently she'd done a couple of 360's coming down the hill and ended up in the bush.
She showed me a couple of tie down points under the car ( a Citroen ).
Basically car was Ok - not too badly stuck - she just couldn't get any traction.
She said she had a rope in back - I said don't worry, I've got my own gear.
Got the snatch strap, shackles and bridle out. Got her to put the bridle and shackles on the tow/tie down points on either side.
Got her back in her car and towed it out gently - I was still very nervous about using unrated tow points.
Turned out to be an easy pull.
Then packed up the wet gear and got on to the 4WD show.
Luckily the lady seemed to know what she was doing so worked out well in the end.

I thought I managed the risks quite well, but I'd be interested to know other's position on this sort of thing ?
    Cheers, Wayne

Nice one! You probably did this, but I hope you checked that she properly secured the shackle on her end before you pulled her out. Not because she's a female or because she's a complete stranger with questionable skills, but simply because you'd want to make sure things are as safe as they can be. I'm assuming this is why you used your own gear. The last thing you want is one of your shackles to come flying back into your car. I doubt she would have paid for any damage if that were to happen

    Cheers

Yep I checked the shackles - I just didn't want to get my jeans dirty putting them on. . Chivalry only runs so far.
If I'd felt the pull was getting too much strain for the attachment points I would have stopped it.

          Re: Little rescue story

In this situation, a tow rather than snatch, as you are the tow'er rather than the tow'ee it is pretty easy to control the recovery and not put undue stress on the recovered vehicle, I would have done the same that you did.

I had a couple of young guys down the road slide/lose their over loaded tandem trailer down a hill and into a drain. The trailer actually dragged the car. By the time I was there they had one of their mates arrive and pull the car out with a drag chain  I couldn't lift the ball of the trailer so I had to wrap my winch extension strap around the a-frame and I dragged the trailer out in low range. As I couldn't see the trailer, the strap was out at full length, I had one of the guys tell me how far out of the drain it was. I was able to control the recovery and had the trailer out in a few minutes with minimal fuss.

D4D might have got a cuddle

I only got the satisfaction of helping a young lady in distress.
