well good on the unions for standing there ground, FFS they cant even get their CPI increase, and the GM gets a big increase, its a pity the GM is COONT and the public had to suffer because he could be stuffed passing on a simple wage increase, happy worker is a good worker, ppl might bag unions and say they are a bunch of so and sos, unions are necessary so that workers get a fair go when it comes to wages and conditions, without them we would be on minimum wage and work very long hours and management would be crapping all over the blue collar workers like myself, the industry i work in the union is strong and where i work we have %100 membership which shows to me that the members care about their conditions and their rights, and they are a necessity, thats my 2 cents, and yeah bring on the flack. cheers samo

Unions are relics of the past, in today's globalised economy it is compete or die, there are plenty of Chinese or Indian workers prepared to take your job for less pay.

For the record the CPI increase or the actual percentage wage increase has never been the issue, Qantas have agreed to that but the unions rejected it as the other demands were not met. There is a lot more that the unions (especially the TWU) has brought to the table that is not being discussed that much to the public. One of the other big demands is a pilot who flys a 767 wants the same money as a pilot flying the more advanced A330, roughly 40 grand per year plus the 3%. The pilots however wore a tie and gave PA announcements, they had the brains not to strike.

You will also find that most Qantas workers, the ones that I deal with during my working week and a couple that I know personally are very well paid for what they do. I fully agree with the stance on job security, keeping the airline in Australia etc etc however in this climate it is just not possible. We all want the cheap fares and we all go on about how Australian we are and we should support Australian businesses and services etc yet when we book a holiday overseas how many of us actually fly Qantas??? I do, its all about the points and the domestic services I get for work travel. I fell off my chair last night when Mr Australia himself Dick Smith came out with support for Qantas.

We are all now hearing from the misinformed few and the union supporters that Qantas should have never of done this and that this action will wreck the brand and the travel industry. What, stopping work for 1 hour, 4 hours, go slows and no overtime bans doesn't. The big issue is now that unions have been caught with their pants down. Everyone in the world can argue for better wages, conditions however if the company goes broke in the process what do we do then when there is no work to strike against...

If you could not tell already, I am behind Qantas in this action 100%. Having been delayed on 4 of out 5 flights 3 weeks ago was extremely frustrating due to union actions. This needed to happen to bring everyone to the table before something unspeakable happened such as loss of life due to aircraft maintenance being behind or the company going down the s-can due to losses from industrial action. I am however sorry for the travelling public that has been caught up in this.

Also on one last note, Alan Joyce does not give himself a pay rise or a bonus. Just like any company the CEO's package is negotiated at time of employment with targets set. If said targets are met you get a bonus, this one was just bad timing. For a company of this size he is actually paid far less compared to other Australian businesses. Look at Westpac for example, 10 million a year plus bonuses is not bad. I still do not agree with how much any CEO gets paid however $467000.00 + for flying an A380 would not be bad either...

Just my 2 cents, sorry if I have offended anyone with my opinions on unions...

              Roger, well said
Samo, your union actually has a reputation for looking after its members rather than themselves. I have sat the other side of a number of unions in my job and there are some that work with you to benefit their members and others that clearly should have been put down straight after the industrial revolution.

I am in theory, pro unions despite being an avid liberal. The problem is that most unions do not serve their members well at all.

We will see many unions come out in support, make accusations and start the political crap. Cut to the chase, some of the demands that are not acceptable are:
bringing the pay of Jetstar (YES Jetstar up to those of Qantas pilots, why, to underpin the reality that Jeststar pilots are paid better than some American international pilots and protect Qantas pilots paid a lot more than Jetstar pilots GO FIGURE!

They also want free travel after retiring for them and their family. GO FIGURE, and finally

that Qantas committ to future hangers here.

Well, if most of our businesses didn't move offshore, they would be non existent.
Free travel after retiring, that is just silly, Chemists don't get free medicine, I don't get free financial/accounting services, mechanics don't get free car servicing for life, wake up you idiots,

And as for wanting others to receive a pay increase, I just don't get it, its not your fight. Besides, you are well aware you are over paid. I hope your jobs are replaced by those American pilots receiving less than Jetstar pilots at the Jetstar rates. That would be fair in our global economy.

I am a Union member, shop steward and always will be, I am only a worker. Union members are workers with kids, mortgages and family.
Nothing magic here. I am with the energy division in the CFMEU. What is wrong with the worker forming a team and talking to the boss about what they need and want???
What the workers have done is court approved legal protected action, qantas have not been willing to negotiate despite what they say in the media.
Qantas claim costs as the issue, but they could have gone for more fuel efficicent planes, that is the biggest cost by far and they have not, in fact they have avoided it. Anyone that has followed this would have noticed that Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Thai International and Etihad have been the future of Australian long haul to Europe, while Qantas is still transferring passengers out of Heathrow.

Basically and I cannot be bothered writing more Alan Joyce is up there us a manager with Sol T.

Umm, A330, A380 and 737's are not fuel efficient... What about the 787, can you blame Qantas for the strikes by Boeing employees as well???

everyone will have a different opinion on this matter, if we all had the same opinion it would be a boring old world, we have just gone through 12 months of Enterprise Agreement negociations ie union vs management, with not 1 hr lost in production or strikes, and we came out with a favourable outcome for management and workers, if everyone works together to make it better for both parties all is good, but when they want to pull the rug out from under your feet thats when you dig your heels in and the gloves come off, im just saying no one wants to work for penuts, and crap conditions, we all want the best outcome for us as individuals or as a group. thats my 2 cents. cheers samo

My point is simple... I feel for the impact that this has everyone involved... especially those who trusted the airline to fulfil its flight bookings, and those staff that trusted others (management and unions) to come to a suitable position - a compromise.

It seems to me that there are no winners in this outcome... and sure as day follows night... if this airline dies... another will rise and take its place.

qantas cut back its order of 380 and 770 , they are the fuel efficient planes. Its qantas own fault they are loosing money on the long haul international flights, its because they are still trying to service Europe through Heathrow and not keeping up with the latest planes and flying direct to European airports like competition is doing. By the way, the main claim of the union was job security, not wages.
Basically the man running the show is a ..............

Job security? Really tell me who has job security? Ask the Prime Minister of the country if she has job security! If unions or anyone demand job security then by the very nature of demanding it they have lost it! Whether you like it or not we live in a global economy and everyone shops on price. The company I work for have just updated our teavel policy basically it is the cheapest flight available. Qantas will never survive in todays world without being as competiive as they can be. As has been said before if you dont like the wages and conditions where you work there are no $&@/i barb wire fences keeping you there. There are many people in Australia overpaid for what they do and tying to force the companies they work for in maintaining this will ultimately be our demise.

Oh really, everyone? then why are we all driving Toyotas and not Sang Yongs? Price is important but its not the be all and end all for everyone.

maxjj, yep, you are right, your limited one sided argument has made me see the light. Lets all start calling the CEO and the rest of board names just like every other misinformed person out there. That's mature and Australian and just to show my support I am going to have a go slow day at work and not work between 2pm and 3pm, also no overtime for me either. That will assist in paying for my wife and daughter, oh thats right I am not in a union member so I must not have any of those. What I will do then is just do a half a$%sd job, expect the earth for it an complain bitterly when I don't get it and then start legal and justified strike action, that will win me support. How Australian am I.

Last I checked Qantas was not holding a gun to my head to work there so if I was that unhappy and underpaid I should just go and work for Virgin or Tiger, oh thats right! They expect far more, pay less and have very little union members.
